The Olive-Egger thread!

Here are the babies I hatched from Nancy. I'm sure I will be using some for this Olive egg project. Isn't the little boy (not so little) a cutie.

I have a pen full of feathered legged BCM . Some of the chicks are hatched with feathers on legs. And they lose them later. I notice one of the splash is getting his back.
Maybe its the muddy pastures they get bugs from.
The bcm are hard to breed and hard to hatch.
I like the olive eggers Have some in the bator. now

lol I thought I had it all figured out. I crossed an OEGB and a d'uccle and got the cutest little birds with light leg feathering coming down their legs and part way down the outer toe. Looks really nice & doesn't get all dirty and so on. Sorry I know this is the olive egger thread, last post on legs I promise! At least nobody can get upset on with me this thread for making mutts haha

It would be nice if it really worked that way. We just had a heated discussion on the Marans thread about this subject. There are 3 types of leg feathering... One like a brahma with middle toe feathering, one like the Marans are supposed to have on the outer toe and one with just feathered legs. If I can find the info I will link it but it will be later tonight. They are not HIDING it, they just didn't express it. I hatched over 30 chicks all from heavily to normally feathered Marans... some have NO feathers and some have middle toe feathering. It is all in what type of feathering they have and how it is TRIGGERED to express.


She was carrying the genes for feathered legs she just didn't have the stuff to trigger them to grow, but her babies got the trigger to grow maybe from both parents. The link will help..... when I find it in the 900 pages since the posts....

I went out and spent some quality time with my (now three week old) chicks yesterday... the only one with any remaining leg feathering is the one out of the FBC Marans. I don't remember who said that the leg feathers may come off, but you were exactly right!

I have a great black ameraucana pullet... pure breed great type.. but I put her egg next to my olive egg and they are so close...I should put her in the olive egger pen with the Marans roo right? ... kinda like a second gen olive the first try

I have a feeling I will have more to put with him soon. Since I have been hatching her Lav split eggs....

I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO GET IN ON SOME OF THE BARRED MIXES TO HAVE. I BOUGHT A BARRED HEN THAT LAY A BLUE EGGS SHE WAS CROSSED AN AMERICANA ROOSTER OVER A DOMINIQUE HEN. SHE WAS ONE OF THE PRETTIES HENS I HAVE EVER SEEN.

Not sure if anyone answered it or who, but -

There ARE recessive feather legged genes actually, yes. I got some Wheaten Ameraucanas from someone who've had reports from other buyers of ending up with feather legged chicks being born. The original breeder's parent stock were clean legged. I ended up with all clean legged chicks. But, as it turns out, I bred a couple of the hens to another unrelated clean-legged rooster, bred them accidentally back to the mother hen, and - Got several feather legged offspring. There was NO chance of Marans or related being in the mix because these birds had crests. And the crest only came from the Wheaten x other bird bred out to. (Polish) Who, I've never had clean legged issues with. So obviously the original Wheaten was carrying a recessive gene and not expressing it, her outcrossed male offspring were also carrying the trait and not expressing, then when bred back I got that little chance of homozygous carriers, expressing.



Btw I've got some F1 x F1 Olive Eggers in the bator, and so far, 100% fertility!

I've also got some normal F1's too.

Good luck with those F1s... I just set maybe 15 F1s so I am hoping to get more Olive Eggers soon... I also have some coming in the mail this week, both Marans over Ameraucanas and Ameraucanas over Marans.... can't wait..... I need to catch that Black Ameraucana pullet and tag her and put her in the Olive Egger pen... I would LOVE to have some Olive Eggers with Beards and muffs.... but right now I just want Olive Eggers... cull for that later
