The Olive-Egger thread!

I can't wait till my olive eggers start laying! I have five that are a cross between my
Original olive egger and my marans rooster and they should lay any day now

My little Olive Eggers are growing =) 5 weeks old now. I know I have two roos for sure.

Painted the girls toenails today...just to mess with my boyfriend, but I kinda like it LOL.

That is a great way to ID them LOL I just don't have that many bottle of polish

Let us know how long that lasts.... my guess would be no long with all the scratching.

The rocks and Marans make GREAT meat birds. I saw one and that roos breasts were HUGE..... she had never seen a meat bird any better. She said he was all meat too. I hope they pick up the laying. That Tropical storm has everyone slacking off.

I will let you know Friday what I have and if I am short you can pick anything you want to fill the order.

My flock takes advantage of any 'odd' weather to take a break from laying. Too hot, too dark, too rainy....vacation time for the ladies

Oh well....can't blame 'em.

I've raised BRs for a long time now (they are my fave for winter laying and foraging skills) and they make great stewing hens too. We usually get pullet chicks from the hatchery, so not many cockerels to raise, but the few we've gotten were really tasty butchered out about crowing age. Now that we're going to hatch our own, it will be nice to have a few extras for the freezer without having to raise meat birds specifically.
Our BCM roo is giant, and he's not even filled out all the way. As much as I like doing the heritage breed thing, I'm really interested in trap nesting with the Marans/BR crosses to see what their egg numbers are.

My chick's paternal grandfather comes from a light-coloured egg line, his grandmother a dark brown line, so his father hatched from a nice dark brown egg. He is a barnevelder, so nowhere near as dark as a marans, but it was a lovely coffee colour. This is why I'm not sure the chick will produce nice eggs or not, as that light-colour line might have an impact.
His mother is an araucana, but she doesn't lay perfect sky-blue eggs, so I'm hoping that will help towards the green.

After all this, it'll be a cockerel! I only really popped the egg in the incubator as a test to see if my white hen is dominant white, but it looks like I picked the wrong egg as it's from my black-red. Doh!
that is similar to my olive eggers and Lizanne's
Barnevelder x lavender Ameraucana

This is Cinnamon, my pullet that layed the green egg.

I can't wait to see what color the other 2 Olive Eggers lay. I don't have any pics of Barnevelder eggs. I just have the 3 Olive Eggers.
