The peas are out of their pen

For many years, pea fowl have lived along the two creeks running through town. Some one finally trapped most of them out,

I miss them

What a good dog you have! My dog would of swallowed the peahen... I have a siberian husky and that would of been a snack for him. I don't get why people trap peafowl, they should just let them be. Afterall they date back to who knows when and they are mentioned in the bible.
.
The first appearance of the bird in the Bible occurs in a summing-up of the wealth and majesty of Solomon (1 Ki 10:22: "For the king had at sea a navy of Tarshish with the navy of Hiram: once every three years came the navy of Tarshish, bringing gold, and silver, ivory, and apes, and peacocks"). (Here the Septuagint translates peleketoi (s.c. lithoi), = "(stones) carved with an ax.") The same statement is made in 2 Ch 9:21: "For the king had ships that went to Tarshish with the servants of Huram; once every three years came the ships of Tarshish, bringing gold and silver, ivory, and apes, and peacocks" Septuagint omits). www.biblehistory.com

D'Angelo N Va. :

Zazouse, your birds are beautiful. I only have one white hen....I am thinking about getting a male and start breeding next year. I so want to free range her, but I am afraid. if she would go away I would be heart broken...all of my chickens are in the hen house with runs to them..but I tried free ranging, but when I wasn't home someone's hunting dog came by....need I say more?

Thats really sad about you peas

I live way out in the middle of 100 acres with 100's of acres woods and pasture around that.

I Am retired now so i am home just about 24/7 and i have lots of helpers here to watch over my birds.

Last time a dog came out of no where running down our road, my dogs were on its tail so fast i never even got a good look at it , don't know who's it was & don't care, i am glade they did not catch up with it, that would not be a good thing at all, well for the dog any way.
Some pic's of the gang.

This is my catch dog she was bred to catch hogs but we also use her to herd our bird and break up fowl fights, she is great and will kill any preditor that gets near the flocks.

I have found that they don't get more than 10 foot from the side of our 100 X 60 foot l barn and have made it completely around it but do not stray far from it's sides.

Havn't decided on a name for the other 3 girls but at least i am not calling them all Peas any more LOL

The peas are going into their 4th week of free ranging they are starting to get farther from the barn area late in the evenings.
The rest of the time they hang out in the dark barn.

I enjoyed the pictures of your peafowl. My pair Petey and Ethel run the show around here. Hoping to have a camera so I can send pictures soon. They are nosy and have to be into everything. I cut way back on critters around here for the winter and moved the guineas to a different pen. Pete and Ethel walk up and down the fence daily giving them a hard time. If one of the chickens runs from them they are relentless in bugging them If they stand up to the peacocks they leave them alone. I had a little cochin rooster that learned he could come stand by me or one of the dogs and the peacocks would leave him alone. Pete was very sick last fall and I finally gave him the kill hm or cure um treatment. I drenched him with big douch of wormer and gave him two cc's of tylan he's been fine every since. He's probably afraid to get sick.

Figured i do an update.
The peas have been free ranging a little over 2 months and are finely leaving the safety of the old barn and venturing out to meet the rest of the flocks.

Here they are checking out a momma hen and her chicks, they were very courious about the peeping noises

Here they are by the chick brooder.

They are going every where now, some of the hens tried to boss them around but they just jumped straight up in the air, sending the hens running.

I could not find them yesterday ,finely i looked under the house and there they were dust bathing.
