The Pita Pinta Asturiana

The new boy has sickle tail in the back but the tail angle is better. The comb is better and the body shape looks better.

Start breeding with the new boy. You will not get chicks from him for two weeks and some chicks will still be pedros for about 30 days.

There should be a lot of new cockerels to choose from for next year. Remember that the hens also add quite a bit. Maybe work with them for combs and tails. Do you mark the eggs and then bad the chicks so that you know which chick came from which hen? Keeping track of that will help a lot.
I do not think that the spanish standard calls for a high tail angle.

I do not like the new boys wings if Pedro who is younger is bigger then Id stick with Pedro. Just get him some smaller combed girls.

I don't think it calls for the sickle feathers. Those are usually a DQ so pedro is better for that.

The old timers say to build the house first and then the trimmings. Body conformation is important not just weight.

Debbi should check the standard and see which has the better shape.

Next year pick the best from this year and then breed to last years hens.

Yes, son to mothers.

Thanks, Chris and Ron. I can only keep one. The other one is going to a friend who is 2 hrs away.

I know what I have with Pedro. He's good with the girls but crows quite a bit starting at 5 AM. His fertility is now around 75% but only 50% of the chicks that develop hatch. He does have 9 girls which is probably 4 too many. He is either Zorro's son or his grandson. He hatched last year from a random egg in with my Langshan eggs.

The new boy was in a pen with 3 Silver Penciled Plymouth Rock and a few other hens. From what I could see, he was good at taking care of his girls. I don't know how noisy he is or what his fertility will be. I know for sure that Zorro is his father.

I want to be wise in my choice. I guess that I could always borrow back the one that I give away. The new boy is familiar with farm life and free ranging which is what he would be doing at the new place. Pedro is used to backyard life! He was not happy when a new boy arrived in the yard this afternoon!

Thanks for the standard information!

New boy has a better tail then and a better comb. The next thing to check is the body shape(conformation). Is the wing problem how it is held or the color.

It is great to be talking about this!

I chose to keep Pedro here with me and took the other boy with 4 hens up to my friend in Placerville. I did tell her that I reserved conjugal rights with him for my breeding program. I'm sure that there is a different word to use for birds. She is setting up a separate pen for them and is going to partner with us in breeding them! She is so excited and LOVES them! She is impressed with how big and beautiful the boy is. Yeah! So, now we have another Pita Pinta breeder! I'm going to get some eggs from her flock in the near future!

The babies are getting to be so big!

They will be two weeks old on Saturday.

I am teaching them to use the vertical water fountain. They are a bit too small to operate it because of the spring but they are figuring it out!
