She had more roosters but a fox or coyote got them. She had one when we picked up our hatching eggs from her.

Since chickens are the opposite of us regarding sex linked genes, It seems likely that more genes come from the hens than the rooster. Of course there is only one rooster in the first generation.

We should be fine for the future but need to breed fathers to daughters more. Sibling mating will cause problems faster. Every 3 to 5 generations needs to be an out cross so that would be this year or next for me.

I really hope we can get that import from the facebook person this year!

So, just to make sure. Are you counting your first group of Pita Pinta as your originals or as F1s? If I count my first group of PPs as orginals then last year's chicks are F1s and this year's chicks from the 2 pens are F2s, correct?

The chicks I hatch this year will breed with, for example, chicks that I hatch or get from your flock next year and they will be f3 to your f3.

We do it all again in three more years. Each time we should get better(closer to standard) flocks.

Let me make sure that I have this right. You are or are not counting Megan's flock as the original? I was assuming that since I was breeding siblings last year that Zorro and his sisters were my original flock and last year's chicks were F1's. Right or wrong?

Megan's flock that we got the eggs from are from the eggs hatched from Spain.

Megan bread Brother to sisters. That spreads the genes and is ok for a couple of times. Then you need to start breeding back to the parent. After that it gets to the point where I have to look at the breeding chart--and work to understand it.



We can wait until we get to the fifth, where a new line is added but it will not really be a new line. The Genes will still be shuffled. It would be great to get a new importation by the 5th generation though.

The big cost would be paying the Vet to inspect the breeder and fill out the forms. Overnight shipping would be a cost too.

Of course it might work best to go there and do the work. See, the Lottery win would let someone spend a couple of months or so getting it all figured out!

The new chicks I have are they also siblings to these two I didnt think you had the pens divided yet for these right.

Adding to a flock that has been separated is very close to adding a new line. This can work for a long time--maybe 20 years before you see hatch and vigor problems. Pita Pintas are so amazing that someone will import them in that time I am sure.

I wanted to just be able to track things well. Currently I have 1 boy and 1 girl who are siblings from Zoro and 5 chicks that are from the pen of Zorro with mothers and daugthers. I think at least 2 of these are boys.

Hi everyone! I'm finding this discussion of genetics and line breeding fascinating. Thanks Ron for the chart! My goal in hatching this year is to find 1 breed that I want to breed to the SOP. I'm looking at Pita Pintas as one of my possible choices (also SFH and W/BW Am). If I choose the Pitas would it be better to get eggs from multiple sources or start with 1 and then add new blood in a year or 2? @ronott1 Do you have more than 1 pen or are you able to mark the eggs so that I can tell who are full siblings?
Also, any quick links for further reading?
