Our girls are only 7 weeks old but we love them. We have 4 Barred Plymouth Rock, 1 Buff Orpington, and 2 Red Stars. Can't believe how enjoyable they are!!

Jeff

I'm 'bout as excited over these as I was around 3 year ago when Kathy posted those GNHs up on the heritage thread.

I'm trying to find out how to get good Barred Rock chicks. I'm looking for the heritage lines, so I don't want to buy from a feed store or hatchery. I would want these chicks next Spring. I'm just doing some research now to figure out how I'm going to do ti.

I have a VERY mixed flock that I inherited from some friends a year and a half ago. The flock included 3 RIRs, 1 buff orpington, and 1 barred rock. The rest are all old, rare breeds with mediocre egg-laying.

The Barred Plymouth rock was my favorite: friendly, stately, robust, laid beautiful huge eggs all year 'round. Then she, and all the other high-production hens, succumbed to EYP one by one. Now all I have left are very healthy, though poorly laying, heritage breeds.

What I really want to find are some barred Rock chicks from the old genetic lines that will be healthy and strong.

Anybody here know of anybody or any place where I might get some in the spring? I'm in SW Washington.

You could perhaps find some this fall at the poultry shows. Most breeders take a few extra birds to sell.
You could certainly get some shipped to you by any of the breeders on this thread. It isn't cheap, but it is sooooooooo worth it.
A nice juvenile trio might cost around $125 shipped. Somewhere in that neighborhood, perhaps a bit more.

In a nutshell? Birds of this kind simply do not come from hatcheries or feedstores. Sorry. Simply don't.

In spring, you could have box of 8 or 10 chicks mailed to you, over night courrier Express. It would likely cost in the same neighborhood. $125-$150.

That's cheaper than the vet bill I had for the one hatchery Rock that I tried to have the vet save.

I'll keep an eye out for local poultry shows. Thanks.

there should be a few breeders of Barred Rocks in the NW USA go over to the Plymouth rock thread and thumb though there and maybe someone on here will notify us too of potential suppliers in that area. If memory serves me close enough there are some of the GSBR (XW-poultry) birds up that way. Jeff

Let some F1 chicks out for some free time. Very, very busy birds, dedicated to ranging. These birds wouldn't likely make the greatest "pets" for people. They are altogether too much the chicken bent on doing their job. LOL

Very stiff wind today, kinda of blowing them around.
