All you can do is work with what is in front you. Our XW versions of the GSBR had tails that were reasonably acceptable. The barring on the XW birds has been extremely good, with only the random pure black feathers appearing on some of the females. Not sure what that is. See if I can find some photos.

The pullet on the right shows 3 or 4 solid black feathers on her breast area.

I have this on a couple of my females as well. From what I recall, so does Speckledhen.

I had a young hen that a few in her chest area...plucked them and they actually grew in barred...timing went along with her first molt too.

This is acceptable(not a fault) in the BRs as long as its not a solid black wing (flights and secondaries) or main tail feather(DQ fault)(maybe hackle too) I will have to check up on that one. Barred Rocks are Black birds with with white (silver) barring.

I have found off colored random brassy/red leakage in some of the sex feathers(mainly hackles some saddles) on a couple of my GSBR males I did not keep them to breed forward with I sold them as flock roosters and the folks that got them are still in awe and wanting more.

I don't know if you can see it in my girl here.. The picture may be too contrasted... She has a few of them. on her chest, and one or two on her back.

Not in her wing or tail

Yes, it is my experience not to be too awful harsh on a pullet until she's gone through a moult. The "failure to bar" every black feather gives the pullet an uneven look and doesn't do her justice for showing her off as a young bird. After she moults out, those feathers have generally evened out nicely.

Plucking is a questionable (cheating) issue in the show circles, but for breeding purposes, again, don't be too awful harsh, too early.

I was actually told by a judge to pluck/pull vulture hocks on a cochin. I will not name names. I was shocked.

In exhibition it is dubious...I have not shown these...I merely wanted to see what would happen...a 'forced local moult' LOL

Don't want to get all side tracked into the whole plucking/cheating conversation, because, boy oh boy, does that ever open a huge ol' can of worms. Needless to say, plucking misplaced or fault feathers is indeed cheating and good judges can spot it.

Onward to perhaps a more "on topic" talk, I'll set a batch tonight. They're just cooling their jets. Couldn't resist getting one more batch in before winter sets in.
