You better believe you'll be happy if you get 4 and thrilled beyond words if you got 6.

If anything? The reports coming back suggests the PO is harder than ever on these shipments. To be honest with all the folks out there? I'm so unsettled about it all that I'm re-considering everything for next year. Shipped chicks are higher than a kite to mail and the word is that the PO wants nothing to do with shipping poultry in the upcoming years.

Folks need to consider local sources for this fancy. I don't see things getting easier in the future, as poultry regulations increase and shippers refuse to handle. Just sayin'.

Hi! I truly agree with you in terms of finding local sources but what if there aren't any? I'm looking for standard true to breed BRs and I can't seem to find any. I would love to know where up north you are, 'cos i'm up north too. I am dedicated in finding and raising good quality birds per the APA / SOP that I would drive several states to get them. Maybe you can help me find a breeder near me? In or around New York state? Not bantams, although they're really cute birds, I like the standard size. Or, what is your opinion on bantams?

I'm trying my hand at breeding Buckeyes, although their strain is unknown ...thank you in advance for your time, assistance, and patience re: my blather. I really appreciate it.

We've gotten a number of folks started up in New York, upstate region. They aren't in a position, yet, to share very much as of yet. Still trying to get their numbers up. I know there are a number of great shows up in that area. Many breeders bring birds to sell, but arrangements are often made ahead of time.

I'll send you a private message.

Well.....as most of us now have chicks on the ground (my hatching is FINISHED praise Glory), thoughts turn to raising them and long term goals for what we want to see late summer/early fall.

For me, for the first time ever, I'm going to be putting some pressure on "the paint job" this year. Type is pretty well locked in although there are some minor tweaks here and there that I want to work on.

I have a small group of 8 week olds (5 chicks) and a small group of 7 week olds (5 chicks) that were my first 2 hatches of the year. Here are a few shots of the group last night. Overall I'm pleased with the size ( I like the overall width from front to back) and the fact that they all feathered much quicker this year than in the past. Color is all over the board and I think I have a few that are "too light" in color. I also have one that is a bit smaller that its hatchmates.

Scott, They're really looking good these days, great job. So glad you've stayed with such a challenging project!
I thought I was "Earlybird" in this forum too. Guess not :(

This is a great thread! But, after 200 pages, my head is about to explode.

Agreed. Welcome! You'll find some of the most dedicated folks on BYC right here on this thread.

I've made friends that I believe will be lifelong here as well. They've helped me in oh....so many ways.

Dottie has hatched 3 chicks so far, one of her own, one unknown BR hen's and one out of Wynette, who has super dark leg fronts and no discernible head spot, though it isn't even fluffed out yet. Two eggs remain with cheeping chicks in them, but aren't pipped yet. Today is day 20. I'm excited to see how these develop since they are my first attempt to get back to the Stukel type after losing Indy unexpectedly. Maybe a new Indy or even better is in one of these chicks, I'm hoping.
Dottie, Wynette and Ida are all 3 years old now and Druscilla, whose egg the unnamed one could be, probably approaching 2 years old now, would have to check on that. Dru is the daughter of the original Stukel male, also named Rex.

ETA: The one that was unmarked was probably Wynette's egg and one of the first to hatch and I believe the super dark chick with no head spot is a Black Rock that sneaked in among the BR eggs from my Splash Rock hen, dang it. Doesn't look like a BR chick. Guess that egg fooled me. She is the only other one in there whose egg could produce a chick like that. Ida's egg is pipped. She is Rex's mother and was also Indy's mother. Just one last egg left to pip and the chick is cheeping. That's Dottie's own chick.

Wing banded the first batch of chicks today. Really want to track their progress this year and leg bands are a hassle and don't always stay on. The banding process was much easier and less stressful than I expected.
