here is a blosl male I raised last year got 37 chicksout of him this spring. just as yard full of rocks fighting to get the lift I need in tail section

Here are a few chick birds from our other line.

One pullet has nice yellow legs and the other does not. I've looked back at "chick pictures" in my files and I can say that some the chicks just have fleshy legs for awhile. Most all the pullets are smeared in dark shin paint, but some turn yellow early and others take a long, long time to turn yellow. A few don't seem to hold their yellow either. Shrug.

As for feathering, the slower the feathering? The sharper the barring, in my experience. If someone can get quick feathering, with that On/Off gene present and produce crisp barring? They'd be miracle workers in my eyes. I dunno. Fast feathering and sharp, crisp barring just doesn't seem to play nice together. Just my experience. Sloooooooow feathering doesn't quite capture it.

No cushion or "mattress" on the back of this girl, Justine. Nice back, just by way of contrast.

I have always to remember that there is no perfect bird. When the back is great, the head is crow like. When the head is great the legs are too close together. Ha Ha. It's a life long pursuit. That's what makes it interesting and challenging for a life time, imho.
AWESOME topline...looks young too...may even get a tad more lift down the line....pun intended!

This is a pretty bird. I'm not a judge, nor do I play one on TV. I'm just a farmer. This bird has many great features. She's handsome and proud. Her front isn't as deep as it needs to be. It has a bit of a "drop off". This puts a notch in the underline. Common enough among Rocks, and her's is barely noticeable, really, but watch for this fault in your breeders. Her wing is nice. But her bigger issue is her back. She's got that puff up in front of her tail which give the bird a ridgeback look. We had 3 or 4 pullets with this look and we refused to put them in the breeder pen. Less is sometimes more. We got 7 females from Kathy, but only two were bred. That's just what we did. Everyone has to go about dealing with the old "mattress pad" in their own way. LOL
Perhaps, I'll just keep her for posterity...but you are right...that cushion on the topline is probably a deal breaker in the breeding pen...I've heard it's tough to eradicate?

Can be. However, when we are first starting out? We gotta go with the players we drafted, eh? In other words, we gotta start somewhere. No bird is perfect. (I gotta keep telling myself that).
