Fred....what do you put water into in these?

Scott, there's more options and adaptations then Carter's got liver pills. All of them involve some kind of bowl/reservoir and sponges of some kind of another.

I watched so many of these How To videos I felt like I was serving time in the state prison or being water boarded or something.

I thought this thread would appreciate this 1918 photo of a little girl with Plymouth Barred Rocks (and ducks). Look how big a couple of the hens on the left are...HUGE. The little girl is thought to be about 4 but actually looks younger to me.... The photo was found at http://www.shorpy.com/node/8774 If you like old photos you'll like their site.

Gotcha....I'm not very "handy" so building one myself would likely be an effort in futility...a few yrs back I got a few "used" ones off ebay for like $25 (not digital, but hatch well nonetheless)

I'm actually cleaning incubators/hatchers as we speak and I noticed the galvanized metal in the cabinet is beginning to rust a like, dang it

We love old photos from that era, and posted a few others. I'm always sorrow not to be able to always attribute proper ownership of the them, as I often do not know.

Yes on the size of the birds. When people say they want Rocks just like great MeMaw had I sometimes chuckle and ask under my breath, "Are you sure?". hahaha. If you seen the GSBR birds of Frank Reese, (and I feed some everyday) you marvel at how huge a real Rock truly is.

The great thing about that site is that it appears family members have the photos posted and tell the story along with the photo, if they know. The little girls name and the story are on the site.

....I am not affiliated with the site at all, but the old stories, although strangers, are interesting.

Scott....I hope that doesn't happen. I plan to caulk like a crazy woman. he sealed most of the exposed edges because we knew that might happen. I might add some foam insulation inside too.

Green stuffs and feed with tagetes(carotenoids/Xanthophyll) in them are good for yellow pigments. Me, I feed probly around 50% corn diet don't have any more issues with yellowing than anyone else that feed little to no corn. Its not corn oil that does the yellowing(brassines) its more often due to autosomal red gene all chickens oil their feathers down with the same oils, some yellowing can be attributed to sun exposure and weathering of older plumage too.

Jeff

I'm making sure to let them free range as the best source of carotenoids is in stuff like grass, insects etc I also feed a yellow corn diet now though I switch it to white corn usually in the spring I'm just trying to keep the yellow up the whole year now I have been hearing a lot about the automosal red gene now what's the best way to see this gene, I thought it was easily seen in cocks

If you are fighting it, you will see brassiness in the shoulders/hackles/saddles of your columbian patterned birds

I don't think I have the gene I haven't seen any brassiness in any of my birds I'm trying to work on getting correct color in my birds and keeping strong yellow leg coloring so far my pulleys have been showing strong leg coloring yet columbian patterning seems to be either to dark or to light
