Not a single one of my Barred girls have cushions.

Justine, they shouldn't. You've got a good line. Cushions in a Barred Rock should be aggressively culled. Your Maine line influence in your BR (and my own) are well bred. A cushion is a throw back and the result, as Scott says, in not breeding for long enough backs. We should not see it in the Barreds. There are too many good Barred lines that are clean and tightly feathered. No real reason to live with the poor ones. Breed it out. You're doing a good job, Justine. I've watched your progress over the last few years.

I think each variety has it's challenges. Some of the varieties simply are in poor shape and it is going to take some really serious breeders to bring them up to snuff. Make hard choices. Tough choices.

I think each variety has it's challenges.
And some are lucky enough to have them all.

Stupid cold snap in December had humidity above 60% with windchills at -40F. It was ridiculous.

It's like a wet slap in the face. Thankfully our weather is improving *knock on wood* January was good :) December was the worst I have ever experienced. We had 4 foot drifts of snow by new year. Most was around 3 feet. I have 1 1/2 left after the thaw.

Gotta say the roo in this coop got the least of anyone. Front is open as you can see and one side inside is uncovered. Others in the wooden coop didn't fair as well.

The rooster in the pic passed this year, but he never got a bit of frost bite.

they all roost where you see that white jug. Strangely their water is the last to freeze too. It does get awfully damp in that run too. Something to be worked on. The coop stays pretty much dry. It gets the morning sun too. That plastic has to come off in early or late spring. It's like a sauna then.

What the heck went wrong with this one. Anyone care to help me? lol

He is going to the pot, but really.. I have no idea what could have caused this.

I laugh every time I look at this photo. He is a walking basketball.

I dropped in when I saw this pic. He looks like an Araucana. Not sure how that happened though. I've never seen an barred Araucana. Though they do have a peacomb. I've a lav that is in with my EE's.
