Got the Vino de hatcher loaded and ready.....temps by shelf are ranginf from 98.8 (bottom) to 99.5 (top)....4 separate breeding pens are in the hatcher.....fingers crossed, chicks due tomorrow

Well....this unit worked very well.....every egg hatched although one chick was born with its "insides out" and didnt make it. Oddly, this time, I had a poor hatch in my Hovabator. I had 11 BLRWs in there and one CR pen (5 eggs).....only 5 BLRW eggs hatched and 2 CRs.....weird

Happy Monday everyone

If you cut through a 100 year old tree truck and study the rings, they'll tell the story of that tree. Some years were hot, some were rigid, some were wet and some were dry. A trained eye can see it.

This simply was one of those Once in 30 Years kind of winters for most folks east of the Rockies and north of Baton Rouge. So, how does such a thing effect this year's crop of breeders? What will it mean, if anything, for this year's crop of hatchlings? We shall see what, if anything, at all

We can say with some certainty that most of us will simply be behind. Absolutely. We'll be playing catchup with the breeding/hatching. This may show itself this fall. The birds will be a bit younger in many cases and this may impact the 4H kids and the fall showing season a bit. Life goes on.

IS THERE AN ONLINE STANDARD OF PERFECTION FOR A WHITE ROCK?

There is the Standard of Perfection, circa 1915 online, in Google Books, I believe. In any case, I read it many, many times online. The current 2010 Standard of Perfection has changed surprising little. That said, the Book is much, much more. The first 40 pages are absolutely worth the price of the Book. The color images of the various breeds are gorgeous.

All Plymouth Rocks hold to the same Standard, regardless of variety.

I'd strongly suggest folks just order the Standard from the APA. That's the only place you're going to get one. Some older copies float around AbeBooks and other used book sources, but why not have the current one. I believe the ring-bound version is around $50. I purchased the hardbound. Nice book. Got it at Christmas time, on sale, from the American Poultry Association.

Thought about you when I saw an Ebay wine cooler on sale. It had been dropped with a slight dent on top and didn't work but was new. I missed the bid but it finished at $20 + $53 shipping. Sigh

Keep an eye on Craigslist for your area.....that's where I found mine. I need to tweak the hatching baskets a tad before the next hatch, but overall I am very pleased. Quite easy to clean also

A small refrig (dorm size perhaps) would work too, just doesnt have a glass front like a wine cooler

Heard my cockbird crowing at 5 am this morning. Loud and clear. Knew he was still alive. −14 officially at the weather station, but we had −20 down here on the banks of the creek in valley bottom. Ok, surely!!!! This now is the last arctic night of the year, right? I've been saying that since the beginning of March and this cold will not stop sinking in from the arctic regions. Good grief.

I understand sub freezing 20's were reported all the way to the near Gulf coast this morning. Absurd.

Got out around 8 to pour hot water and offer feed and of course, the eggs, were solid as rocks and cracked. I just thaw them and feed them back. Try again tomorrow.
