Just like Scott said, why reinvent the wheel?? I' m pretty sure that you will be able to find quality rocks from a respected breeder near you, so why feed and breed thousands of clicks just to get to where you could start from?? You will have enough of a challenge just getting the perfect bird from really good stock...

I think i know what i'm going to get for these questions but i just want to make sure,
So here is what i was thinking about i want to start a project something and i thought about trying to breed up barred rocks from hatchery quality Generation 1 to a show quality in a few generation, i mean barred rock i can get cheap around here and i want to breed them to be close to standard with good meat and egg production like they had back in the early 1930's

I know I'm not the only one but if you want a project work with Delawares. That will give you a bigger challenge IMHO.

Even the Barred Rocks I've seen here beat anything I've seen at the NY state fair. Delawares on the other hand about all you can say about them is "it's alive". Lord have mercy it's a sin what they're showing and being allowed to show. AND you don't usually see any at the other shows we have here. Nor Columbian Rocks either.

Seems to me with chickens it's like lots of other things. Everyone wants instant gratification. To impatient to work with just one or two breeds. Sorry that might be more than needed to be said.

I had a great time at the Volunteer State Poultry Show in Dickson, Tennessee today and looking forward to the next show. :)
I hate that I didn't get a chance to speak to Pat Malone as he was very busy doing a great job judging the poultry today. Other than not getting to talk to Pat the day was perfect. As I got to talk to Terry Disney and many others.
I got BV & RV with a couple of my Silver Penciled Plymouth Rocks but with that being said I also need to say I was the only one with Silver Penciled Plymouth Rocks at the show. LOL :)
Terry Disney got BB in the Plymouth Rocks with a very nice "LARGE" White Plymouth Rock cockerel. :)

I was so busy talking to Terry Disney and others getting breeding advice & understanding how the point system works I completely forgot to get pictures. sorry :/

There’s still a few “string men” on the fair circuit. These guys focus on rare breeds in hopes they’ll be the only one in variety and win the premiums. Like passing a hatchery Columbian Rock as a Delaware or something they can call a Buttercup or a Houdan. They have no interest in breeding them.

I am so excite! We finally ordered Plymouth Rock eggs and they are here 30 of them from Jeremy at CW Ranch. They were wrapped really well and all survived. Some of the eggs are pretty big and both my husband and I thought they are very pointy and long. Are all the eggs that way or only the heritage ones? Can't wait to see the chickens that will hatch from them.

I have a few Delawares from The Garry Farm--Bargain here on BYC I shipped hatched from her eggs. Her parent stock look Nothing like the above birds. I woke up to 3 of Fred's Hens Barred Rocks this morning. I had 4 in lockdown but could see the 4th one had a very bad air cell so it was a late quitter. Anyhoot, I hope I get 1 M-2 F--LOL. Thank you Fred.

We have few if any Heritage Breeds in this part of the country--if y'all can help me a bit I am dead serious about promoting and distributing these Heritage Breeds. I'm a newbie for sure but I am eager and smart--and very determined! As I only have babies its going to be awhile!
