If the power was only out for a short time they will be fine.  Might be a little later than expected but should not kill them.  I have had power off over night and 8hrs and still had good hatches.   :fl

Hi Donna, the first time it was out around 8 hours and the second time it was out around 5 hours so I am hoping for the best. :)

So they might be a day late.  I wouldn't toss any unless you are SURE.

Ok I just got done candling the eggs and 10 clear eggs were tossed out. I saw movement in at least 20 of the 30 remaining eggs. :)

A BR x BR would never throw a yellow chick, would they? Because I only have one brown egg layer in my flock, and its my BR hen...and the one BR rooster, yet the egg I just hatched from them both is a yellow chick.

No, they will not. The only logical conclusion is, they are not genetically Barred Plymouth Rocks. That doesn’t mean they can’t be great chickens.

So are you saying since my birds are "scrubs" I shouldn't participate in this thread?
No one said that, and I’m sure no one meant to imply it.

It takes a good foundation of stock and a lots and lots of work to keep these birds in proper Rock form. Remember, these breeds are man made, they are not species. The pilgrims didn't find them wandering the woods of the new world. Without dedicated folks working hard to maintain these breeds and varieties, they fall apart into mutt-ville and scrub-dom in fairly short order.

That's what this thread is about. Folks working, sharing and encouraging each other in the preservation and building up of true to standard bred Plymouth Rocks.
Most people don’t realize that most commercially available “Plymouth Rocks” have nothing in common with Plymouth Rocks bred to the American Poultry Association’s Standard of Perfection other than they are single combed birds that lay brown eggs. Sad really.

I don’t like the term show quality or show birds. It would be more accurate to say, there are Barred Plymouth rocks and striped birds.

Let’s say I wanted a German Sheppard dog that could swim well and run rabbits. So, I breed to a Labrador, and then to a Beagle. If few people knew what a Sheppard looked like, I could say I had a great swimming rabbit running Sheppard. Sounds a lot better that ¼ Sheppard-1/4 Lab-1/2 Beagle. That’s basically what the hatcheries have been doing with chickens. I hope people will follow this thread and learn what German Sheppards look like.

Is there any chance that his chick is a pullet? It is a 5 week old Barred Rock and already has a significant comb and is aggressive compared to the other chicks. Thanks for your expertise! :)

I'm just joining the tread now, before I read much of it, to share my Barred Rock, Dot who is a big happy goofy pullet... She is bigger than and has a deeper voice than the rest of my gals and just squawks away when I pick her up. Somehow she knows her name and tries to scurry away when I call her, When I'm working on the coop she's the first to come over and check my progress.

The picture is Dot yesterday at 11 weeks... The entire flock came over to help me enjoy a beer!

No way. You got yourself a cockerel 100% sure.
How ironic - the little guy started to crow this morning. I guess I should have waited an extra day to post my question. LOL There is another chick he fights with all the time. Does this mean the other chick is a cockerel too? (The other chick is an Easter Egger).

No, not at all. Pullets like to spar, too.

My Silver Penciled Rocks from Horstman coming out of coop for 1st time Sunday, 3 wks old--1 Delaware from Nancy, 2 wks old. I have 4 Penciled Rocks, 2 are much, much lighter than the other 2, does that mean anything?

Ooops--there is a 2 wk Columbian from Scott here too.
