The storms have tapered off and the broody moms demanded to be released, so I let them out, but not with out some trepediation. Do Barred Rock chicks run small or is this a function of egg size, which was not very large at all. I know they have the genes to grow up big, because I have seen the parents, but these chicks are smaller and less capable than what I had last year from hatchery stock. They are now a full 4 days old, so I think they will be OK being out on pasture with their mom. Next year I will be better prepared to keep them in isolation longer in order for them to grow before facing the big bad world of my back yard.

Hatchability has been good. The experienced hen went 9 for 9, but the pullet went 4 for 9. I have 6 more scheduled to hatch tonight or tommorrow and then that will be it for the BR.

I wouldn't worry about them....I had broodies out with chicks last yr that were 1 day old....IN MARCH, temps below 60 degrees. Good broodies will keep them warm, protected and broody raised chicks are absolutely the best adjusted of any you'll have

Just wanted to update on my mystery chick, lol.

I spoke with my neighbor tonight, and he confirmed that my BR cockerel is actually a BR/WR cross, which some of you had suspected. He also informed me that the hen is, too. So that totally explains the WR chick, lol!

Thanks everyone, for your help!
