Scott, I still cannot get over how stinkin' wide through the tail your birds are. Geeeesh.

I have a question regarding my 7 1/2 month old Silver Penciled Plymouth Rock cockerel. The fourth point in his comb doesn't stand up straight and around half the eggs I have in the incubator that should be hatching this weekend will be offspring from him. My question is should I be to concerned at this point in my breeding and will it be passed down to his offspring chicks?

Others can comment, but my mentors always taught that the comb is such a small point cut that this alone should not be the sole reason to discount using a male.

Perhaps Tom Wheeler has another view?

After nearly 5 yrs here, the only comb defect I worry about is side sprigs. Those get culled immediately ... Other than that, if type is good, just about anything goes for me

I do hate the looks of his comb but his length of back and over all larger frame is the best I have seen in the males I've had.

I am going to assume you realize that your male is of hatchery stock, at best, in breeding?   He looks like you've fed him well.  But, on this thread, to be very honest.  He'd be mighty tasty with some noodles or dumplings.

I do agree with you very much, I don't feed them at a certain time of day, they can eat as much as they want! But I do not want him dead, though I am looking for a home for him and my golden sex link hen

Scott, you’re going to be on your hands and knees with a magnifying glass looking at ear lobes and wattles before you get those Columbians culled down.

Aoxa and Fred, I’m jealous of the color you guys have got on those pullets, that’s tuff. I have to call that 60/40.

Fred, no cushion on a hen puts a smile on your face but I’m more impressed with the lack of fluff on that or any hen.

Clayton, I agree with Scott and Fred, Don’t breed side sprigs or thumb marks. Other than that, if he’s one of the best cockerels you get, go with him. I’ve shown some pretty bad combs. That top line has a concave sweep to the tail that you don’t often see. Seems like I read that somewhere…..oh yeah, the Standard.

You guys all ROCK! Keep it up. Looks like I’ve got some catching up to do.
