The Price Of DE.....Is It Always This Expensive???

I feel lucky, I can get Red Lake food grade DE in 40lb bags for 14$. I just ask the local feed mill to bring in an extra bag with their usual shipment they get in (since they use it in some of their feed mixes).

Here it is $32 for a 50# bag or, if you don't want to store that, there is a 1.5 lb bag for $16. Funny math but we went with the 1.5 pound bag so we didn't have to store it.

Is this through ups shipping? Or with the drop point? With the drop point it looks like a $50 minimum order.

We picked it up at the drop point. I'm sure shipping it UPS would be insanely expensive!

When you get stuff from a drop point, Azure calculates the shipping as a percentage of the total dollar amount. So the shipping on a big 25# bag of sugar can be the same as the shipping for a little bottle of vanilla!

I asked people at the store where I got my chicks and they didn't even know what DE was. If I decide I need some I will most likely have to look online.

Unless you're trying to kill bugs in the feed, there is no reason to do that

It can also help with minor intestinal parasites when put in the feed.

I don't know if you have Farm and Fleet stores where you are at, but I got a 40# bag for under $12 last year at mine. Good luck looking for a cheaper.

Thank you for all the great replies! I am a real newbie to this chicken thing, although I have kept quail for years. And even then, I had never heard of DE til I found these forums. I have already sprinkled some around and am going to start adding a pinch to their feed. My babies are all still "babies" at 17 weeks old and haven't had time to really build up huge amounts of internal or external parasites yet. So this is a good time to start on that bandwagon.

Thanks again all, and I WILL be on the hunt for some cheaper DE. The nearest large town with any other feed stores, also with a TSC is 75 miles away. So next time I make the trip, I will be sure to check out the prices there.
