Horse Tales From Heaven by Rebecca Ondov. Read it a few years back, but wanted to read it again. It is a good book.

Uncountable chickens.... Probably somewhere around 20 now... Last year a lot of hens died including my special little hen with a crooked beak, Snappy. Then there is Thud who also died. She was a silkie.
2 horses, 2 dogs, 8 cats, 2 sheep, then thechickens. Oh and an occasional possum that usually doesn'tmake it out of the chickencoop alive unless he is playing dead
