I've had toes pulled off even through 1/2x1/2 wire. Happened last night. Coons will definitely pull heads through 1/2 x 1 wire. Happened to me multiple nights in a row until i covered the cage with 1/2 x 1/2 hardware cloth. I'm going to put a second layer of 1/2 x 1 wire under my cage about 3 inches down from the actual floor of the cage. Then, I think I will put poop trays on that wire. That should protect the toes.
