The Rhodebar thread!

Look at an individual feather on your bird. On a single barred bird the feather will be 50/50 colored/not colored. On a double barred bird the feather will be 1/3 colored/2/3 not colored. The not colored will be your white bars. It really is easier to get an idea by looking at pics of male and female Barred Plymouth Rocks since they are more black and white. The male is double barred and the females are single barred.

There are some other factors that can effect barring as well. Feather growth really makes the lines cleaner with a good barred rock versus a hatchery barred rock. The true barring versus cuckoo look.

I am not certain if your bird is single or double and I would not let it concern you that much at this point. Single barred birds are not garbage or immediate culls. They will not provide you with 100% Rhodebar offspring, but they will provide you with 50% offspring that is pure if bred to a barred female. If you are looking at this as a project then single barred is not a bad place to be.

My Rhodebar looked much better after he got his adult plumage so I wouldn't worry too much.

Double or single barred? I was told by the breeder he is double, but he's darker in color. This pair is 8 months old.

Hmm. .. That cockerel is double barred but that female is awfully light. Pay close attention to down color if you chose to breed those two and choose your next generation breeders carefully .

Guys pay attention, That male and this male are showing black on their Breast, this is not good, the Rhodebard should be all Red except on Tails and once you extend the fly wings, but overall should look red barred with black barred tails, not black barred breast...

same for the following guy on the left
we have 6 cockerls and 8 pullets that hatched on 1/29 . 2 of the 6 cockerls were much darker than the others. of my 2 original roosters from greenfire 1 is much darker than the other. I .

No I didn't PM him, I hate pestering him. I just figured he would be checking in soon, I hope. At this point I am figuring I will keep the wildtype chicks regardless of gender and take it from there. There are a couple of chicks acting more rooish then others but they don't have wild type markings.

you dont pester me melroseladi, I actually like Pms.... as for the keeping the whildtype chicks, thats a good Idean you will not lose the e+ when you go back to RIR to further improve the type, color and size.... can you tell me more about the cross? did you cross a Rhodebar Male to a HRIR Female? that would be the best cross possible as all of the F1s will inherit one copy of their dad's sex linked barring gene regardless is they show the headspot or not, previous crosses like Legbar x Silver Laced Wyandotte which would make them e+/eb has shown me that the Headspot its either not showing at all or very faint, but the e+ chipmunk strips still shows thru.... so keeping the wildtype looking chicks is your best bet..

Good to have you back Marvin. Yes I crossed a RB rooster over HRIR hens. I have 1 chick that is very much wildtype, very pronounced. I have others that the chipmunk markings are more muted, not the black stripes but still very much visible.Should I keep those chicks as well, or just the one that is very pronounced?
