The Rhodebar thread!

Good to have you back Marvin. Yes I crossed a RB rooster over HRIR hens. I have 1 chick that is very much wildtype, very pronounced. I have others that the chipmunk markings are more muted, not the black stripes but still very much visible.Should I keep those chicks as well, or just the one that is very pronounced?

Penny
Then ALL of your chicks are going to have one copy of sexlink barring gene(which is good)...

keep the muted ones too, but keep an eye for that well defined chick, cull all of the wheaten looking chicks, even if you dont see the headspot at this stage(could be very faint) once you are ready to go back to Rhodebar e+/eWh B/- BC2/3 females crossed with e+/e+ B/B male this will regain the autosexing trait..

Guys pay attention, That male and this male are showing black on their Breast, this is not good, the Rhodebard should be all Red except on Tails and once you extend the fly wings, but overall should look red barred with black barred tails, not black barred breast...
Thank you...this is all new to me and I'm learning so I keep asking questions. This is the pair I have to start with. I have two cockerels from shipped eggs also that are about two months old. This is the flock the eggs came from:

Single barred foreground, double behind him?

There were only two chicks that hatched from the shipped eggs:

Would I be better off doing an HRIR improvement project to get my RB if one of these cockerels has good type, double-barring, and limited/no black except tail? Or just cull like crazy from the mature cockerel I already have? I don't have a ton of room as I primarily have Marans.

The person I got the pair from gave me some eggs that are due to hatch next week. I'll be posting photos to get help in teaching me what I'm seeing and what I should look for. Maybe they will be all culls...we like chicken dinners.

you would do the breed a great favor by doing at least one outcross to HRIR, and you do have a double barring, cross that roo to HRIR... the hens will be e+/eWh B/- basically rhodebars with one copy of wheaten but with better Type and color

Here's my first F1 to hatch... This cross is a RB cock over HRIR RC hens (yes I will be producing RC rhodebars). It's rather crusty still, but at least we can tell about down color...

One of the biggest problems I've seen on cockerels (in addition to type) is too much black.
Your cockerel, unlike many others, does not have too much.
Type on all Rhodebars is terrible... but since his color is good and IF he was easily autosexed at hatch and not yellow, then I would get some nice HRIR hens and put him over them.

Awwww! I love how dark they have turned out and the horn beak. I think these Underwoods are going to be great to use to better the RB breed. I lost that last 1 that hatched so I have 8. I have 1 that I am a tad worried about. It has no horn beak, yellowish white fluff on wing edges, and barely eyeliner.

I am having a hard time taking pics. My camera will not work and my cell phone pics just stink but here are a few.

Wing on most prominent wild type

This little chick has yellowish white fluff on wing bottom.

Thanks Marvin. These F1's are very close to being as dark as the HRIR were as chicks. I am pretty impressed so far. I can't wait to see what they look like as they grow out.
