So "if" you were going to keep a male to use over either a RB female or a HRIR female, would you keep one with the darker stripes more similar toa the females or would you keep one like the less obvious striped ones?

Dang good question Sheri. I would watch the male that is in top pic middle bottom (second pic left bottom) and the one that has the dot and line on head, bottom right in both pics. I didn't really get any wheaten looking chicks in my hatches and most of my males had dark head lines (not as dark or as wide as the females) and good background color so for my BC1-B I am going to take the best looking male. I have that one that has a lot more HRIR characteristics at this point, better back, chest, tail, and wing carriage so if I put him over a HRIR then at least some of their offspring should have nice type. Then take the best from that cross and cross back to RB.

Sounds like you've got it.
Your F1s will all be single barred. While they will not be autosexed technically you can figure out the sex pretty early on. You want to mark your chicks that are dark chipmunk. Don't worry about sex at first. Track those dark chipmunk ones. After the first 2 weeks you will be able to begin to tell male from female (although most will be female but not necessarily all). Look for those who develop tails quickest... Those are your girls.
For learning purposes I am tracking all of mine but... It is those darkest striped females you will want to use to breed back to your male RB.

The first two photos are the same young cockerel from a different line (he's too young to help me out yet). The cock in third pic is the one with too much black but what I have to use right now.

I think my answer to you got lost in the shuffle. The pair I have right now is the too-light hen and the too-black cock. I'd be interested in evaluation of the young cockerel (3.5 months old).
I also have a much darker red pullet of about the same age with a bit of lacing pattern (I know, get pics!).

I like type much better on the cockerel, back looks longer and wider, and if he keeps that lower tail set that will be an asset. I can't tell how his wing carriage is from the pic, though. So far coloring looks decent as well.

I agree with Penny. He's a much better choice than the one in the bottom pic.

there is no way to sex them at this moment... I mean by nature e+/eWh is very variable, you cant count a faded tripes as males

No, I think it will be about two weeks before it becomes obvious. But that want related to my question. I grouped these into 3 groups like the previous two hatches but that's not relayed to sexing just color.
My question was about what to look for in an F1 male chick?

Thought I'd share some pics I snapped today...
First two are of the RB I put over my HRIR to create my F1s.
He is sweet, which is always handy, and was very easy to deal with during breeding season.


I couldn't get a good shot of my other boy, but I got a decent shot of one of his sons that I hatched in Jan...
He has a much better tail set than any of the other RB cockerels I've hatched in addition to having good down color.
He will be an improvement over his father, so I think I might keep him since he is not closely related to the cockerel above.
With about a dozen F1 pullets to breed this fall I may split them between these cockerels I am thinking.

Nice!!!! I have moved all my F1's out to their outdoor brooder/grow out pen. I was looking at one of my older F1 cockerels and goodness gracious he has the nicest comb I have seen in a long time. Nice 5 points, thick, straight, I so hope it stays that way. I also have a runt cockerel in my second hatch. He is super tiny but is eating and drinking good. He runs between the other chicks legs to push his way to the feed dish. I was hoping he would catch up but so far that's not the case. I was going to cull him but curiosity got the best of me and I started thinking since he is feathering out super slow I wonder how that slow feather growth is going to affect his barring. So he has a reprieve for now.

Candled my rhodebar shipped eggs today on day 8. I see 8 that look to be developing out of 14. So fingers crossed for enough for a start.
