The Rhodebar thread!

oh the chart is just fine, the issue for you guys was(I am also to blame because this is the first time I took time a read the whole thread) changing the brown leghorn with RIR roo

brown leghorns are wildtype e+ which is a autosexing chick down color when sex linked barring is pressent, BUT... RIR are not wildtype(e+) they are Wheaten and this is a none autosexable chick down... it just wont work at all

yes unfortunately I´m afraid you need to start over from scratch... you cant use the cream legbars(they lay blue eggs right?) are they the crested ones?
Oh . . . . I read somewhere that you could substitute RIR in place of brown Leghorn but otherwise follow the chart.

Thank you! Still reading through everything you posted trying to absorb what it all means.

Yes, Cream Legbars lay blue eggs, but an autosexing olive egger is just fine with me!

Sigh . . .

Shouldn't you cross the autosexing roo back to the RIR hen (not vise versa) and still get back to RIR type and color?
you can also do that, that will provide you with more barred chicks(hens and roos)...

you guys can always keep an eye for project birds like the Crele chantecler or other lager Crele project birds, I know this will help you obtain a large size rather quick..

here is just one example

as Tim Adkerson said earlier you can also work with the brown gene(eb) instead of the wildtype, this alone should give you darker birds, BUT they wont be like the Original Rhodebars...

Ok, let me be real specific about my question, as it is my understanding that those of us that are trying to develop a Rhodebar strain are using the chart BUT replacing it with the RIR rooster instead of the Brown Leghorn. Are you saying that by doing so that we will not, eventually, produce Rhodebars?

I have a sex-linked cockerel (RIR rooster over BPR hen) that I am growing out alongside of RIR pullets. Will this crossing eventually produce Rhodebars?

again the chart was just fine(folowing it) BUT the genetic mistake was made by using RIR, people that said that were not aware of the autosexing issues wheaten can bring...

Quote: well if you dont mind large meaty Red autosexing olive eggers you are going to be just fine...

you will produce Rhodebar adults alright, just like Tim adkerson did a while back(nice birds he had) they just wont be Autosexing at all....

I'm starting over with my Cream Legbar roo. Can I cross him to my RIR hens to get F1 chicks, the either cross the F1 x F1 or cross F1 back to a Legbar to re-establish the autosexing trait?

well if you go back to legbar they will be much leaner than RIR, so a F1xF1 should give you 25% autosexing RIR looking birds....
