The Rhodebar thread!

Quote: It is a cell phone camera under fluorescent lights. I can tell you that they have some orange coloring but not as dark as it should be. These are my first generations of culls so I will hope for them to get better next year. I might single mate them in a few weeks. I think the lighter chicks are coming from the pullets.... not the roo.

Some colors in vetwrap work better than others. I have had some stay on form MONTHS. I use a strip about 1/2 inch wide and the full size of the vetwrap about 4 inches. I put them on so they look like a TAG. I make sure it is really tightly together at the leg.

I don't use them anymore. They are time consuming at my place with the volume of chicks I hatch. They do come off so I started toe punching TOO. But now I toe punch and use the elastic bands in my siggy. WAY easier! Quick too.

Vet wrap adheres best if pinched. I leave a tiny bit of extra as I wrap, like the leg is a wee bit bigger than it is, then pinch the extra down to the correct size. Similar to the tabs that Dmrippy leaves but more of just s little lump. I have had them stay on for months.
I toe punch too but during the first 6-8 months of culling and evaluation I take lots of notes and most of the time do not want to have to catch them and pick them up... I want to know who they are at a glance.

I have found that toe punches can be a pain because sometimes they rip or grow back, or worse yet they get a rip unrelated to the punch as they get older - then it can get confusing.
I suspect I am just bad at toe punching so don't depend on it.
For those who prefer toe punching I would love to know your tracking system. I know some folks track by sire only, some by line. I haven't found a good system I like

DMRippy, I think most of your chicks except the yellow have good color, but it is the lack of obvious head spots that would concern me. If you have one with an obvious head spot but still darker, I would tag that one separate as a potential keeper to retain auto sexing.

OK, first I'm a newbie. Disclaimer right out there. :)

I separate my eggs by full siblings and "fence" them off when hatching so they stay separate until I can open that incubator door and toe punch. My toe punch system is for specific matings UNLESS I'm not sure which hen laid a particular egg, then I just punch the sire's marker on them. This is for my Marans, as I don't have Rhodebar breeding going on.

I'm in the middle of a hatch with 3 (of 11 Rhodebar eggs set) making it to lockdown. So far there are two males, one a middle-pumpkin color and one VERY dark red. Can't take photos just yet because of my "fence" system being made of gutter screen and it's hard to see in the back of the tray.

they do have head spots. I have tagged and kept a few darker roos. we will see. I don't think they are as dark as my current roo so may use him with some newer pullets and see if I get darker roos.
