The Rhodebar thread!

400

@ nicalandia - this is a BC1... F2 coming in a few weeks.

I hope you keep hatching these. I'm really wanting to get some from you this summer.
I'm hoping to get some feedback from some folks who have been there done that with these genetic crosses. This group is a BC1 group, so... All should have correct barring but only half will be homozygous wildtype, the other half have a wheaten gene. So... If I'm correct in my evaluation of them as chicks, the breeders from this group will be pure Rhodebars. I have more of these in the bator but I also have F2s in the bator. I am planning to take the best F2 cock and put it over the best Bc1 pullets. And probably visa versa. At that point all offspring should be 100% autosexable but until I breed that cross in the spring I will not have 100% documentation/proof that they are. So... hopefully by next May or June I will have offspring of my first improved Rhodebars. Yeah! BTW... I am paying zero attention to comb at this point. Some are SC and some are RC but I am not considering combs (some of which are UGLY) in any of my evaluations. I figure I have enough hurdles to watch for with type and color that that's the least of my cull criteria.

BTW.. I have 2 groups of F1 pullets - the breeders and the not.
They are all laying like crazy. My lay rates, even with the days shortening are very high. So... That's good news.

Hey Guys and Gals

I have 9 hens and 3 roosters. They are all from the same hatching. There a two distinct body types in the flock -

Body type A - Longer leaner frame with longer tail feathers and tail feather are more erect.

Body Type B - Thicker body with shorter tail feathers and tail feathers are more parallel to the ground.

The mixture of type A to type B is about 50/50.

Which body type is more desirable to keep or does it really matter? Im giving away two breeding trios to friends so I want to keep the best ones. These are the first Rhodebars I've owned so I'm learning as I go. Are there ant other traits i should be looking for? Sorry the pics are not that great Im have a hard time taming these guys.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I'd like to see better pictures in better light but their coloring does not look correct... they all appear to have some black feathering or maybe it's just the light. Hard to tell. The color looks off on the pullets and I can't tell if it's the barring or pattern. As far as type, you want a brick shape with plenty of length and width should be ask the way back. Tail angles all need to be brought down. Have you read the SOP for RIR? That's the type you are looking for.

Redridge - Thanks for the input. I will get better pics for you. I have had the worst time hand taming these guys. There are a couple that freak out every time I get near them and that spooks the others.
