My husband and I have just spent a few days stringing monofilament line over the open area in our orchard, bearing in mind that there will be less cover this winter. Monofilament strung up 8-10 feet up at 2 foot intervals will deter most hawks. Use the shiny, clear, 40 Lb test. It will sparkle in the sun.No raptors will risk their wings in it. They use this in Fla. to keep seagulls off the balconies too. Leaves will not foul it as they will netting.

Thanks for answering, DL.
So, this is fishing line. Should I use a colored one? I guess a hawk's eyes are better than mine. Hence 'eyes like a hawk.

I dont read much on here anymore due to a busier life with teens but when I see you start a thread Im always glued and amazed by what you do!! :D I am a faithful fan and my prayers and best of luck goes out to you and the chickens for a great recovery!! Ill be watching!!!,

Thank you!!! I never dreamed this thread would bring out so many well-wishers and sweet support...it's a little overwhelming and wonderful!

Okay, folks...going to try something here that I've never done before, so no makin' fun when you see it. It's a work in progress but due to so many requests, it just had to happen. I have a small webpage started and it isn't finished yet but, with all of you helping, we just may be able to turn out something useful. I encourage OTs to help me answer questions and newbies to ask them so that we can build an organized site wherein the info can be accessed easily. I'm new at this, so bear with me?

http://459507378526106724.weebly.com/ This link should take you to a webpage called Chicken Diapers and 101 other things chickens don't need. Some of the pages have no content and are just waiting to be filled as time allows, but the framework is in place.

There is a blog under the "more..." button and I'm really wanting some honest questions and answers...I'd like to keep it open but will make it by approval only if folks get rowdy.

Yes, BK! I sang to them last night as usual as I counted my 19 on the roost and secured the coop. I thought all this time that Boaz's shaking his head might be mites...but I guess he doesn't like my singing. First he cocks his head like a dog would and then he starts shaking his head. Maybe the notes vibrate fluid in his ear and tickle him. I have to keep the notes lower or he thinks I'm crowing and then he competes. His real name is Boaz. Nickname is Luke Skywatcher (sounds the alarms for hawks)

A friend of mine flew over my orchard today. He called to ask what the shiny spiderweb was. He says from the air it is VERY visable as the line sparkles in the sun. I'll see if I can't get him to snap a photo. The size of the area is between 1/4 - 1/2 acre.

I also have heavy bird netting over all the decideous bushes like giant Hydrangeas under the spidwerweb. The netting comes to 18 " off the ground. When all the leaves fall, the birds will still have safe places and access to their covered runs and coops under the spiderweb.
