Wow! That's a LOT of fowl! I'd love to own that many cheepers
tongue.png
No rabbit hutches here though. And when they grew up we'd have nowhere to put them
sad.png

My chicks lived in cardboard box brooders with newspaper linings and a worklamp hanging from a tennis racket balanced across the top of the box. it was very improvised
tongue.png

ah, i see. I've always wanted to try and have rabbits free together, but they seems to be too territorial, argh, the hutches waste space in my opinion.
thumbsup.gif
i normally make something like this for each brood: http://www.communitychickens.com/coops-and-cages/make-this-simple-chicken-brooder.html

I don't like rabbits. They make me itch, and they're not really that interactive with their owners anyhow
tongue.png
Really? I thought you used them for the chickens? That's no waste of space!

I'll check it out and get back to you. Must reply to other post.

I guess... we keep our chickens for the eggs. They lay an egg a day, which is great, because it means since we got them, we haven't been buying eggs at all! Seeing as we used to buy free range (me and my mother have a thing against caged hens
hmm.png
) we've saved quite a lot of money.

yep, i love them for their eggs at times, but it's a pain in the neck when it comes to winter and they don't lay, it annoys me to have a flock outside and not a single egg for the whole winter, i think i'll see where i can get some of that thing, waterglass was it called?
hmm.png
to preserve them over at least some of the winter.

Our hens lay all through the winter. They've never stopped. I think it tires them flat-out though, because the older ones stopped after only two years of an-egg-a-day...
We usually have so many eggs we have to either do a mass boiling or give some away to friends, or they'd go off stacked there in the fridge
lol.png
I shoulds end some to you in winter

what do you mean, rabbits go into fits of insanity at times and other times pee on you're lap, nothing non-interactive about that.

i think you shouold force moult on them.
hmm.png

th.gif
indeed, you have no idea haw many eggs we use for 4 people, on a good day, a dozen eggs, on a bad day, two eggs, and we only get a dozen every 4 days.

In regards to the link: I lvoe a good tutorial like that, that spells everything out for you. I need those
wink.png
Sounds like a good brooder idea, I hate having to buy lots of fancy equipment for my projects. Homemade stuff beats all
thumbsup.gif

Rabbits pee in your lap?! My, my friends' rabbits, which I used to poke and stroke and pick up as a kid because they were, well, rabbits, were docile as anything and barely even moved.

What's a force moult? I think it'd too warm here for them actually to go into that winter hibernation, no-laying thing
lol.png

Wow, that's a lot of eggs, really. We get two a day from our younger hens, and there are only three people in my family. We ALWAYS have a huge surplus, the things are really stacking up in the fridge. The egg compartment is overflowing. You should see my neighbours' fridge though - they have six hens, and the fridge tray at the top (the pull out one, you know that?) is packed FULL of eggs. It's insane.

they must have been males, if the females get comfortable enough, they won't fall asleep, but will do their stuff.

umm, i don't know much about it, you'll have to research it, it'll stop the egg production and give the hens a rest, although they will loose they're feathers and regain them afterwards.

yeah, you guys much have a breed at has a high production rate ( no, i don't, we have an ages old outdated fridge.

I love making homemade things. There's a certain sense of ... mystification about it. Hmm, I don't know.

"Do their stuff"? Should I be scared?
hide.gif
Yeah, my friends' rabbits must've been female. I got no pee. I don't think I even saw the things defecate once
lol.png

Oh okay... then we'll have to go back to buying eggs. If the hens are okay with it, I don't really mind if they stop laying after two years - we can always buy new birds. I jsut don't want them damaging their bodies by overlaying or something.

Yes, we have sex-links, it was all we could find here in the heart of the city. I don't know if there are any real breeders around here. These chicks must've been rolled out of those cage hen places for sale in those little shops.

yep, me too, i made that brooder mostly out of nessecoty due to the fact that the onld on wouldn't contain more then ten chicks.

scared of what?
hu.gif
No, that would be males. Rabbits will go to the bathroom anywhere, and everywhere regardless if it's you're lap, or anyplace else.

yeah, i don't think they can overlay, but i've never seen them lay 24/7/365.

oooh, Sex-links! yeah, those would drown you in eggs if they could!

Wow, you need mroe than ten chicks?! The most I've ever had at once is two! We only need that many for eggs, but we thought one might get lonely by itself
tongue.png

Oh, you said something about the females 'doing their stuff'. Oh, so it's the males that don't pee? Gee, Im' confused.

hu.gif

Mine probably lay 350 days out of 365. it's insane.

I like the sex-links. They have nice feather colours. THey're all so different- mine range from pale orange to the deepest red, some with speckles, so with laced feathers... there is such variety.

I have a dilemma. The parents are going out tonight to some work colleague's dinner party. I usually go with them, but seeing as I don't know these colleagues I'll be staying at home by myself. I'm considering going to the movies, but am thinking I would look lame going by myself (as I really want to see Source Code and it would be a good opportunity.) Also, it gets dark around the time I am thinking of going, and there are no buses and my bike is kaputt so I'd have to walk about 3km in the dark. What do you think?

(Sorry. Long paragraph
