Chapter 22: As The Rain Falls
Alas, the rain! After a few weeks of sun and lovely hot weather, that dratted rain was back. Fatima of the Gold-dust Feathers went outside just once that morning, to take a dust bath. As you can imagine, that did not work out too well.
That was all right though. Ophelia of the Chocolate Down was back and feeling fine. Her tail had stopped drooping and she ceased drinking excess amounts of water. Fatima was glad that her friend was feeling better.
Broodiness was hovering within the coop. Lately, Olympia of Midnight had been sitting in the nest box long after she had laid her egg. She wasn't quite broody- Fatima knew what that looked like. That was when Olympia puffed herself up into a big black beach ball and strutted around with her wings half extended. That was when Olympia made growling sounds at anyone who came within her sight and hoarded eggs like they were actually going to hatch.
"They might this time though," Olympia told Fatima. "I heard the People talking. They're going to get some fertile eggs for me to sit on if I go broody."
"So why don't you?" Fatima peered up at Olympia's brown eyes.
"It's not something you can control," she replied, packing at a grain of feed. "Can you control when you lay an egg? No. No one can. Like that dimwit Charlotte. Do you remember when she was in the nest box and the Great-Handed Man brought us some treats? She came rushing out but then laid her egg right in the middle of the run!"
"Yup." Fatima was glad that the bully Charlotte was gone. Charlotte of the Snowy-Cream Wings had picked out Fatima's feathers, and therefore made Fatima enclosed in a cage. Fatima didn't like that at all. She liked it even less than this darn rain.
As if to mock her, a few heavy drops spattered on the coop roof, making her jump. She sighed and settled herself down for a long, rainy, and very boring day.
