The Saga of Fatima of the Gold-dust Feathers! UPDATED - Fatima died...

Chapter 28: The Molt and the Snow

Fatima of the Gold-dust Feathers was extremely uncomfortable. Every time she moved, she lost a piece of herself. And when she tried to settle down, it was like having a thousand bits of pricky pointy straw were jabbing into her vulnerable skin.
"Molt," Olympia of Midnight pointed out, rather unneccesarily.
"I know that, bossy bloomers," Fatima snapped back, in a horrible mood. She huddled down. It was so embarrassing to have big bare patches and no tailfeathers. Her gold-dust feathers were scattered everywhere.
"Watch your mouth, chickie," Olympia warned her. "Keep in mind who's head hen 'round here."
"I wouldn't be too sure," Fatima muttered once Olympia was safely out of earshot. "I'm starting to understand a little Great-Handed-Speak too, you know. And guess what, Mrs. I'm All That? There's gonna be a coop..." Fatima struggled to remember the odd word. "A coop something. And you might not be lead hen anymore."
Rita clucked in disapproval. Fatima was always amazed at how well the old, sick hen was coping. "No use talkin' but your elders and betters like that, Teema," the smaller hen scolded. "Mind your beak."
Exasperated, freezing, and being pricked in a hundred places, Fatima stalked into the run. A cold trickle on her comb caused her to bolt back into the coop.
"What's wrong, Miss Teema?" chirped Una of the Snowy Bloomers. In the past few weeks, the pullet had swelled to nearly twice Fatima's size, though she remained meek and respectful, as she should.
Fatima poked her head out the pophole. There was no doubt about it. "Snow," she said in wonder. "It's snowing before white-season."
"Eh?" Olympia knocked Fatima aside as she charged outside. "Well, bless my tail feathers!" she exclaimed. "It's snowing!"
Artemis of the Quick Wit could not resist a dig at Olympia. "Fatima already said that," she mocked in a sing-song tone. Olympia pecked her on the head.
"But how is this possible?" wondered Phoebe of the Striped Wings. "It's not anywhere NEAR white-season, it's still red-season." Clucks of agreement were passed around the coop.
"Strange things happen," muttered Rita from her position on the roost. "Now if you all would kindly shut up, I would like to get some sleep."

************************************************************

Fatima heard about the upcoming Coop Elections! They were held last year and Olympia won. These new ones will be held starting November first.

BTW, Fatima's Saga is having its one-year anniversary on November 16.

Yup... once the younger girls start laying there will definitely be a new chapter, hopefully something will occur before then, though, because they're only 17 weeks!
Oh, I forgot to add that either Una layed just one egg when she was 16 weeks or Olympia layed two eggs in the same day- one normal, one tiny.
