Chapter 2

Nakota groaned as she blinked her eyes open unsteadily. She was incredibly sore, and she felt a piercing headache, like a pulse of lightning. She winced as a particularly sharp pain shot through her skull. She grunted with minor annoyance as a drop of water dropped from the ceiling and conveniently landed right in her eye. Sighing, she tried to get to her feet, but flopped back onto the stone cold ground uselessly. Her entire body felt as if it was just a mound of pure lead, and her bones were made of the heaviest metal. On top of that, heavy rusty metal shackles were locked onto her legs, and several chains wound around her legs, going up and hooking high into the smooth stone wall.

"Ah, darling, you're awake," a voice purred in the darkness as a familiar pair of glowing purple orbs appeared. Nakota felt her fur begin to bristle as she pinned her ears back and snarled.

"I swear, if you call me by that name again I will kill you," she growled.

"Oh sweetheart," he whispered, prowling into view and walking around her in a steady circle, "we're way too close for you to dare to hurt me." He brushed his tail underneath her chin, and she snapped her teeth at it.

"Let me out of these chains and I'll show you exactly how much I love you!!" She screamed, fury making her quiver with anger. Her pelt bristled, making her look considerably larger and her ears were pinned back as far as they would go.

Thunder purred with amusement, "Where's the fun in that?" He asked her, his voice innocent but his eyes full of dark menace and arrogance.

"You may have me, but Rainea's army and the other guardians will stop you!" Nakota screamed again.

"In your dreams, oh powerful guardian," Thunder said simply, his eyes taunting the paint mare. "Your band of mutts can't stop me. As for the other guardians, well," his face took on a small smirk, "they've already been taken care of." He stared off into the distance, as if reminiscing on a time long ago.

"Whaaat?!" Nakota cried, "What have you done to them?!"

"The useless guardians of the house of the elders, fox, and bird have been captured, and my men will have the winged beast within hours." The guardians of the House of the Elders were Collia, a black cat with wings, Stone, a black pegasus, and Onyx, a gryphon with the back of a black panther and front of a black hawk. Sedna, a masked owl, was the guardian of the Dark Forest, and the guardian of the arctic was Kristina, a winged arctic fox. Izou was a large black dragon and was the guardian of the Valley of Shadows. Nakota had been the guardian of the valley and mountains.

Nakota stopped for several long moments, taking in what she had just heard. Feeling no other option, she pleaded, "why are you doing this?"

"With the guardians out of the way, Rainea will be mine."

Nakota broke out into frantic crying. She sent a telepathic message across all of Rainea, "children, I hope you can hear me.... It's time for you to show your true strength... I believe in you all"

"So then what?" Foxshadow was eager to hear the rest of Rocky's story. Rocky opened his mouth to start again, but stopped as he swiveled his ears around uneasily. "What?" Foxshadow asked, the eagerness leaving his face and replacing it was curiousity.

Rocky looked at Kate uneasily, his fur beginning to bristle from fear. Sorrelfur's ears flicked as she received Nakota's message, "that was Nakota!"

At the same time, Foxshadow got it. "What happened?!"

"Nothing good," Kate said, her voice uncertain and with a twinge of fear, "we have to find her!"

Rocky sniffed the air, swiveling his ears around, "it came from the east!" He shot to his feet and ran, Kate following suit.

"Hey! Wait for us!" Foxshadow called, running after them.

"We want to come too!" Sorrelfur added, running beside her brother.

Rocky turned to yell over his shoulder, but whatever he had to say never reached the two kittens, as something slammed into their (the kittens) side and they were engulfed in darkness.

Chapter 3

Sorrelfur blinked her eyes open, her pupils dilating as her eyes readjusted to the light. Looking around, she saw that she was at an ancient building made of concrete. The ceiling was open, and columns, some broken and crumbled from age, reached for the sky. There were cement bricks on the ground that were the same color as the concrete; they had begun to bury themselves under the ground over the course of many, many years. A shackle was locked around her left hind foot, binding her to one of the columns. Frantically she struggled, trying to get away, but a voice stopped her. "It's useless."

Turning to see who it was, her jaw dropped in astonishment. Rocky!

"You got caught?!" Sorrelfur exclaimed. Rocky nodded somberly. A naive young kitten, Sorrelfur didn't think that Rocky could have been captured in a million years.

"Can't you use your telekinesis to get out?" The voice was Kate's. Sorrelfur turned to look at the white fox, her eyes wide.

Rocky shook his head, "There's a power neutralizer nearby."

Kate grumbled, "that explains why I can't shrink to get out of this."

Sorrelfur looked around, seeing Foxshadow shackled to a nearby column, still out cold. "Foxshadow?" She mewed feebly, worried that he was dead. She felt relief course through her as she saw his side rising and falling ever so slowly.

"You all awake yet?" An eerily familiar voice said in the shadows. Sorrelfur recognized the voice as that of Thunder's, the wolf who had asked for directions earlier.

A dark thought suddenly entered Sorrelfur's thoughts: What if Thunder was the one who hurt Nakota? Her suspicions were confirmed as the dire wolf stalked into view.

"You!" Rocky snarled, "so you're the one who did that to Nakota!"

The wolf regarded Rocky calmly, an innocent smile sitting on his muzzle. "Maybe I am."

"Why are you doing this?" Sorrelfur cried, "What do you want with us? Let us go!"

Thunder chuckled softly, "not yet, sweetheart. I still have some business with you."

At this point, Foxshadow had awoken. "What?" The fur along his spine had begun to bristle with fear.

Thunder's cool gaze turned over to him, "one of you must give me your complete loyalty."

Kate's fur bristled angrily, "What use are a few kittens to you? Leave them alone!"

Thunder turned to her, a mocking smile curled up around his muzzle. "Make me."

A long, eerie silence filled the air for what seemed like an eternity. Thunder and Kate stared each other down, Kate's eyes shooting daggers in her glare while Thunder just calmly watched her. Foxshadow's hind legs quivered almost uncontrollably. Kate finally spoke up, "take me."

Rocky looked at her in surprise.

"Let them go, and you can have me." Swallowing bile in her throat, she added quietly, "You'll have my complete loyalty."

"I'm a bit surprised you gave in so quickly," Thunder said amiably, glancing at Sorrelfur and Foxshadow out of the corner of his eye. "Normally I have to resort to... other measures before my prisoners give in." As Thunder glanced at Foxshadow slyly, the kitten cowered, his ears fallen back in submission. "But an easy one is always nice." He padded over to Kate and began to chant an ancient spell, placing a paw on her head. Dark smoke began to surround her, and Rocky shot to his feet, trying to reach her though his attempts were in vain. Black flames began to rise, licking at the fox hungrily. She flinched as the bitter smell of burnt fur began to fill the ancient building. First the oddly cool fire singed her fur, though she felt no pain. Like a phoenix, she suddenly turned into ashes.

"NOOOOO!" Rocky screamed, tears streaking down his face as his voice echoed for miles. Thunder just watched the flames, as if waiting for something to happen, placid as ever. Suddenly, the flames began to take on the shape of a fox. Rocky blinked, and a black shape began to rise from the ashes. It was a fox; her pelt was jet black with only a few streaks of white here and there. She had a pair of midnight black wings, and they flared as she shot her eyes open. They were dark blue, and glittered in the sunlight, like chips of the coldest ice. Horror etched across Rocky's face as he realized that this was his mate, now under Thunder's spell. "Kate!" He cried.

"How do you know my name?" Kate questioned him, her voice icy. "I've never seen you before in my life." She turned to look at Thunder, "what can I do for you, master?"

"Kate, please!" Rocky pleaded, fighting back tears. "Remember me? I'm your mate, Rocky!"

Kate glared at him, "shut up! I don't know who you are!" Her fur began to bristle angrily, and her eyes were like blue fire.

"That's enough," Thunder said calmly, and Kate calmed down, her fur lining flat again. Sorrelfur and Foxshadow looked on in horror, too terrified for words. "Goodbye, Rocky, Sorrelfur, and Foshadow. I am sure we will cross paths again." Fog began to build between Thunder and Kate and the three creatures, and they were seemingly being pushed away. Rocky tried desperately to get to Kate, but it was no use. She just watched him calmly, her eyes like chips of cold ice. The last thing they remembered before they blacked out again was overwhelming fog all around them.
