Chapter 7

Sorrelfur padded beside Foxshadow into the cave, looking around. It was huge, and towards the back was a medium sized watering hole. Her eyes scanned the cave, widened in surprise as she recognized one of the creatures.

The gryphon who saved me!

Among the gryphon were several other creatures, most of them cats. A tannish-gray chicken with streaks of black on her hackles, feathered feet, and smudges of autumn brown down her chest sat proudly beside them. Bluestar introduced them to the group, and afterwards Sorrelfur hurried to the gryphon.

"You're the gryphon who saved me!" Sorrelfur exclaimed.

"I am?" The gryphon cocked a brow before she remembered. "Ahh. Now I remember. Nice to meet you, Sorrelfur. I'm Tapska."

"Bluestar said she'd pick a mentor to teach me how to fight," Sorrelfur meowed, "will you be my mentor?"

Tapska shrugged. "Don't know. That's up to her."

***

Weeks passed. Bluestar had chosen herself to mentor Sorrelfur, and the tortoiseshell kitten was training well. She felt a pang of jealousy as she looked at Foxshadow practicing with Stormcloud, a brown and white tom on Bluestar's team. Foxshadow had already discovered his power, pyrokinesis.

"Don't worry," Bluestar encouraged her. "You'll receive your power when the time comes. I waited a long time before my power showed up, but my wait was worth it." Bluestar's power was the ability to influence other creatures' powers, weaken them, strengthen them, or use them for herself.

Sorrelful nodded cheerily, but Bluestar's words didn't ease her much. She wanted her power now to save Nakota. But she didn't complain.

"Now try twisting in mid-air while you do that," Bluestar instructed. Sorrelfur did as she was told, but was hit with a sheathed paw from behind from Bluestar. "You should have seen that coming," Bluestar meowed, her voice firm but gentle. "You need to keep an eye out; if you don't, your enemy will take advantage." Bluestar's ears suddenly shot up. "Wait!"

"What?" Sorrelfur asked.

It took a minute for Bluestar to reply. "Yes, that's it. I can sense power energy coming off you."

"What?!" Sorrelfur exclaimed.

"Not just that... I think..." Bluestar's eyes widened. "Yes, it's true. You have my power!"

"I.. I do?!" Sorrelfur was too stunned for words.

"Try to take in the power energy coming off the other creatures," Bluestar instructed. Sure enough, Sorrelfur felt a slight pulse of energy coming from the other creatures around her. Some were stronger than others, Sorrelfur noticed, and Bluestar's was the strongest, but they were all very small. "There you go," Bluestar said encouragingly, "you're doing it! Now block it out." Sorrelfur blinked and did as Bluestar told. The energy pulses stopped. "That's excellent. Now take in the power energy again, and try and replicate Foxshadow's power and make a flame appear in your paw."

Sorrelfur closed her eyes tightly as she tried to do what Bluestar tol her to do. This was hard! Grimacing, she felt a small shockwave within her as she absorbed Foxshadow's power. holding her paw up and trying as hard as she could, a small flame flickered on the edge of her claws.

"There, good!" Bluestar urged her on.

Sorrelfur tried as hard as she could to make it bigger, and it suddenly snapped, taking up her entire paw. She just looked at the flame, too shocked for words before it died down.

"Excellent," Bluestar meowed. "We'll work on absorbing powers tomorrow. For now," she looked up at the moon, which had risen, "let's go to sleep."

Sorrelfur fell in behind Bluestar as she padded back to the cave, but couldn't tear her mind off her power. I got it! I received my power, and it's one of the best there is!
