Chapter 8

Several more weeks passed. Sorrelfur was becoming a better fighter every day that passed; soon, she would be able to go into battle with Bluestar and her team. She awoke just as the sky was beginning to get lighter as Foxshadow gently shook her.

"Wake up," he whispered. "Bluestar wants you to come with us."

Sorrelfur groggily got to her feet and padded out of the cave behind her brother. She looked up at Bluestar, who was standing outside the cave with Silverstream, the chicken Stripe, Tapska, Faedon, a female fennec fox, and Nakia, a dark brown barn owl. "What are we doing?" She whispered as to not wake the others.

"Going to the moonstone," Bluestar whispered back in reply. She began to pad away from the cave, and Sorrelfur, Foxshadow, and Bluestar's team fell in behind.

"What's the moonstone?" Foxshadow asked.

"A special place underground. The moonstone itself is a giant glowing rock; it's where the guardians go to consult with StarClan, our ancestors and the guardians before ours," Bluestar explained, her voice gradually rising to a normal conversation level as they got further and further away from the cave.

"How come we're going?" Sorrelfur ventured.

"I want to ask StarClan for guidance on what we should do next to help rescue the guardians and defeat Thunder," Bluestar meowed. "We're leaving so early because it will take us nearly a day to get to Highstones."

"I'm exhausted," Foxshadow complained.

Bluestar kept walking as if Foxshadow hadn't even spoken. They came upon several giant pillars of stone, reaching for the sky.

"Is this Highstones?" Sorrelfur asked.

Bluestar nodded. They came upon a massive cave in the center of the pillars, yawning in the center of the mountain. "Mothermouth," she whispered. She turned to look at her followers. "Tapska and Nakia, stay here on guard. The rest of you, stay behind me at all times. There are two paths, and if you go down the wrong one, you'll go deep into the ground and probably won't come back." She turned and padded into the darkness, and Sorrelfur bounded to her side.

Darkness quickly swamped them; Sorrelfur strained her eyes to try and see anything, but it was hopeless. The only way she knew Bluestar was in front of her was by scent and by feeling her with her whiskers. Twisting and turning, the path became narrower and narrower, to the point where the walls pressed against Sorrelfur's sides. Sorrelfur began to wonder if this path was ever going to end anytime soon, but just as she thought that, a bright glow filled her vision.

"The moonstone," Bluestar breathed. They had reached a huge cave. In the center was the moonstone, shining as bright as a star. The moonlight shone down through a hole in the ceiling, shining on the moonstone. Sorrelfur guessed that was what created its brilliant glow.

Bluestar padded to the moonstone and sat down in front of it, her head tipping just a little bit. Her nose touched the edge of the stone, and slowly, her eyes closed. Sorrelfur stood beside Foxshadow, watching Bluestar closely. Several long minutes passed before Bluestar's eyes snapped open.

"We need to get back to camp," she meowed, her voice tight.

"What's wrong?" Sorrelfur asked, uneasiness rising in her chest.

"Don't ask. We have to go, now." Her voice was urgent as she turned and padded stiffly to the entrance of the cave. Sorrelfur and Foxshadow followed her, their ears flicking uneasily. As they reached the open, Bluestar motioned with her tail for Nakia and Tapska to fall in behind, not even looking at them.

"Bluestar, what's wrong?" Nakia asked, worry rising in her throat.

"No time for questions. We need to get back to camp as soon as possible." Bluestar's meow grew tighter.

What's going on? Sorrelfur thought, bounding after her mentor, still wildly confused. She didn't know what was up, but it was nothing good.

***

The sun was high in the sky now. A gentle breeze brushed through Sorrelfur's pelt, carrying the sweet scents of the countryside and must of the pine trees, but she didn't care. Pelting after Bluestar, she stopped as Bluestar froze. Sorrelfur swiveled her ears, trying to pick up a sound.

"Oh no..." Bluestar breathed, her eyes widening and her ears flattening. "It's what StarClan warned me about!"

At that moment, Sorrelfur heard it too. Distant screeches and the sound of tearing flesh filled the air. Sorrelfur's eyes widened and her pelt bristled with fear. Am I ready for my first battle?

"Come on!" Bluestar yowled as she pelted towards the source of the sounds. Sorrelfur sprinted after her, kicking up leaves and tiny stones. Horror etched across the young tortoiseshell cat's face as she saw the battle.

Everyone was fighting. Rocky moved his paws in an X motion, and a boulder that lined the inside of the cave slammed into an attacking bear's head. Lana and another gryphon locked into combat in mid-air, screeching like raptors. Dark storm clouds formed overhead as Stormcloud multi-tasked between stomping his paws and scratching at a dog.

Sorrelfur frantically looked around for an opponent. She saw a falcon dive for Graystripe, another cat on Bluestar's team. Yowling and bunching her hind legs, Sorrelfur lunged for the falcon, unsheathing her claws. She bit into the bird's wing, digging her claws into the soft, unprotected side under the wing. Sorrelfur felt her claws shred flesh. The falcon screeched and flapped its wings frantically, prying itself out of Sorrelfur's grasp. As it flew away, favoring the wing that Sorrelfur had attacked, she realized that she had done more damage than she intended to. Did I-

Sorrelfur's thought was cut short as she felt jaws wrap around her scruff. The world spun as she was shaken violently, and her mind raced. She felt herself being thrown, and thinking fast, she remembered a technique Bluestar had taught her in her training. She twisted around, bunching her hind legs before she hit a tree. She saw that the creature that had been shaking her was a dingo. All of this happening in just a sliver of a second, Sorrelfur timed it just right and bunched her hind legs. She leaped off the trunk of the tree, her hind legs sending her soaring back to the dingo. Surprise flashed across the dingo's face before Sorrelfur landed right on the dingo's head, her claws unsheathed. She scratched wildly, and the dingo cried out in pain as Sorrelfur tore flesh. The dingo backed up and shook its head, trying to shake Sorrelfur off, but the cat simply dug her claws in deeper. The dingo let out an ear-piercing howl as Sorrelfur's claws came down right in its eye and a kick of her hind legs nearly took its nose off.

Sorrelfur was thrown off as the dingo gave a final shake of its head. She spun around in mid-air and caught herself on the ground, her eyes blazing fire as her lips remained curled up in a snarl and her fur bristled. The dingo ran away, yelping and howling. Sorrelfur was pelted with blood along her chest and paws; not hers, but the dingo's.

A scream of agony snapped Sorrelfur out of focus from the dingo, and she snapped her head towards the source. Fear rose in her chest as she recognized whose it was.

Foxshadow!
