Chapter 12

Sorrelfur's ears shot up. "Who is that?!" She asked Foxshadow urgently.

"I don't know," he replied, "but come on!"

Sorrelfur was already racing towards the river as fast as she could, her tail streaming behind her. Foxshadow trailed behind, his pawsteps pounding against the ground. Her flanks heaving, Sorrelfur looked around frantically as she arrived at the lake. She swiveled her ears, and found the source of the desperate cries. Not far, the river dove into a waterfall, a log was lodged against a rock. Two wolf pups and three kits clung onto a twig desperately, kicking against the rushing current. Their movements had grown weaker, and their cries quieter. They let out a low cry of distress as the twig snapped a bit. Sorrelfur knew they didn't have much time.

"Help us!" One of the kits, a black and white tom, cried to Sorrelfur and Foxshadow desperately.

"We're coming!" Foxshadow shouted. He turned to Sorrelfur, "we have to do something!"

"I can see that!" Sorrelfur snapped. "But what in StarClan's name are we gonna do?"

"Swim!" Foxshadow retorted.

"Are you completely mousebrained? We'll be swept away!" Sorrelfur shot back. "Then who's gonna save them?"

The twig snapped again; this time, it nearly severed it from the log completely.

"Listen, we just need to do something!" Foxshadow urged.

Sorrelfur glanced around frantically. Her eyes stopped at a few other rocks, sticking up out of the water. They were slippery from water and algae, but they would have to do. "There!" She shouted. She leaped towards the first rock, balancing carefully. She took a step onto the next one, and Foxshadow followed. She hopped onto the log carefully, making sure that she didn't accidentally make it roll and cause the pups and kits to be swept away. They whimpered as the twig snapped a third time; it clung onto the log by a mere thread, and Sorrelfur wondered how it hadn't been swept away already.

"Hold on," she urged, "you're gonna be safe in a second!" She turned to her brother, "Foxshadow! Get on that rock and grasp the end of the twig in your teeth!"

Without hesitation, Foxshadow sprang onto the rock, his muscles rippling under his fiery red pelt. He gripped the edge of the twig in his teeth, holding it firmly. "Hold on!" Sorrelfur urged through clenched teeth as she grasped the other end. They yelped as it snapped, and Sorrelfur pulled it onto the log. The pups and kits' flanks heaved, and their eyes closed from exhaustion. As she gazed down at the black and white tom, Sorrelfur couldn't help feeling a flicker of admiration for his bravery. She blinked; they were all brave. Why am I being partial to him? She shook her head. All she needed to be worrying about right now was getting them into the cave.

"You take the kits," Foxshadow meowed as he leaped onto the log. "I'll carry the pups." He picked up the biggest one, a male, and managed to hurl it on his back while picking up the smaller one, a she-pup. Sorrelfur tucked the scruffs of the other two kits under her jaw while she wrapped her jaws around the black and white tom's scruff. She led the way back to the cave; Foxshadow dragged behind her, staggering under the weight of the wolf pups.

The cave was bustling with activity, and madness ran rampant, as usual. Sorrelfur spotted Stormy and Smokey, two black silkie roosters who had recently arrived from another part of Rainea, foraging in the undergrowth, and she made her way towards them. They were brothers, and had been part of Bluestar's team, but had not been able to make it when Thunder's circus had started.

Smokey looked up as he saw the bracken shiver. His hackles rose for a second before he realized who it was. "Hello, Sorrelfur," he greeted the pretty calico she-cat, "what do you have there?" He cocked his head curiously at the kits.

Sorrelfur put the tom on the ground gently so she could speak. "Foxshadow and I saved some kits and wolf pups at the river," she meowed. Just as she spoke, Foxshadow appeared in the bracken, nearly crumbling under the sheer weight of the pups.

"Put them down," Stormy piped up, "we'll go get some help." He turned and disappeared into the bracken, trotting back towards the cave. A few minutes later, Stormy came back with Tapska, Graystripe, Stormcloud, and Nebrivo. Nebrivo took the pup on Foxshadow's back in his jaws, while Tapska took the she-pup in Foxshadow's jaws. Foxshadow's sides heaved for air, relief coursing through him after having the nearly overwhelming stress from the sheer weight removed. Stormcloud took the calico she-kit off Sorrelfur's back, while Graystripe took the light brown tabby. Sorrelfur kept a firm grip on the black and white tom's scruff; she would not let him go, no matter what.

Stormy led the way back to the cave beside his brother. Sorrelfur left the black and white tom in the care of Spottedleaf, before going to explain to Bluestar with Foxshadow about what had happened. Bluestar nodded, "you two did the right thing. They'll make good warriors for the team."

"She'll take any stray," Alana muttered to Faina and Suzie from the shadows.

Bluestar whipped around to face her. "What was that?" Alana's gaze darkened, but she backed off. Her yellow eyes gleamed in the darkness. Bluestar rolled her eyes, "idiot." She muttered openly, not caring if the gryphon heard.

Sorrelfur went to Spottedleaf's medical cave. She was anxious to know about the condition of the pups and kits, but was especially anxious about the black and white tom. Padding into the cave, she mewed a greeting to Spottedleaf. "How are they?" She asked.

"Great," Spottedleaf meowed. "I gave them some herbs. Most of them are unconscious."

Sorrelfur's pelt prickled. "What about the black and white tom?" She blurted out.

"Oh, he's fine. In fact, he's awake right now, if you want to talk to him. Just take it easy; he's had a rough day."

Sorrelfur nodded, feeling relief course through her. She didn't understand why she was feeling so protective of him; he was doing just as well as the others. She stifled a sigh as she went into his medicine cave.

The tom was curled up in a soft nest of moss. His fur was drying; it contracted and clumped, and he kept grooming it to help it dry. He turned to Sorrelfur as she came in, and his gaze instantly lit up. "You're the cat who saved me!" He exclaimed, brushing his muzzle into her shoulder and purring like no tomorrow. Sorrelfur felt a wave of affection for the little cat.

"Er, well- my brother helped you too," Sorrelfur mewed, unable to stifle a roaring purr in her chest.

"What's your name?" The tom asked, looking up at her with wide blue eyes.

"My name's Sorrelfur," she meowed. "What's your name?"

"I'm Crowfrost!" He meowed. "My sisters' names are Mapleshade and Specklefur. And my best friends are wolves!" His ears drooped suddenly. "They drowned, didn't they?"

Sorrelfur put her tail comfortingly on Crowfrost's shoulder. "No, they're alive. We saved them, too."

Crowfrost instantly perked up. "Really? Can I see them?"

"I don't know," Sorrelfur meowed. "If Spottedleaf says so, then of course. Wait here." She padded out of the cave and turned to Spottedleaf, who was frantically grabbing herbs. "Spottedleaf?"

"Yes, Sorrelfur?" Spottedleaf asked urgently.

"What's wrong?"

"Silverstream's started kitting."

Sorrelfur's eyes widened to the size of saucers. She had known that Silverstream's stomach had been growing, and that she had been sleeping a lot more, but she didn't know that she had been expecting kits. Then it clicked: she's carrying Graystripe's kits! "W-well, can the pups come out?"

"Yes, yes, of course." Spottedleaf seemed distracted as she grabbed some fennel stems, raspberry leaves, and cobwebs before rushing out. Bewildered, Sorrelfur headed to the small cave that the wolf pups were sharing. She swiveled her ears to the hallway, where she could hear madness raging.

"Hey," she mewed to the wolf pups. "Come on out; your friend wants to see you." The wolf pups instantly jumped to her feet and followed her eagerly. "What are your names?" She asked them as they padded through the medicine den.

"I'm Sol," the male wolf said, "and she's Quartz."

"Mm," Sorrelfur murmured. Crowfrost leaped at Sol playfully when he came in, and they gently wrestled. She headed back out to the main cave, where Silverstream had four bundles of fur suckling gently at her belly. Graystripe, Stormcloud, and Foxshadow were making their way down a tunnel with moss in their jaws; Sorrelfur guessed that they were making the nursery that they had been talking about for several days now. Stripe brooded on her clutch of eight eggs; she was expecting Smokey's chicks, as well as a few abandoned eggs she had found, and she was already getting cabin fever. Much to her dismay, she had several more days left to go until they hatched. Sorrelfur let her mind wander; she wondered if one day, she would have kits of her own.

Shrugging, she went to gawk at Silverstream's newest kits. She had named two already; one dark gray tom, who was just like his father, was called Stormfur. A light tabby she-kit was called Feathertail. Sorrelfur guessed that the other two would be named by Graystripe later when he finished the nursery. Taking the edge of her nest in her teeth, she dragged it down the hall to the medicine cave and put it just in between Quartz and Hades' den and Crowfrost's den. She could hear Mapleshade and Specklefur stirring in their nests; she would let Spottedleaf deal with them. She was exhausted, she realized as she headed down the hall to go out and pick up that fresh-kill from this morning. The sky was darkening from twilight to night as she headed out. In the distance, an owl screeched. A cool breeze ruffled her fur, and she took in the crisp scent of the mountains.

She dragged the rabbit and duck back to the cave, depositing them on the fresh-kill pile before taking two mice and dragging them to the medicine cave. She gave one to Crowfrost, before eating the other.

"What about us?" Quartz whined.

"Spottedleaf will get you some," Sorrelfur promised. "I'm not allowed to take any more prey from the fresh-kill pile today." She rose to her paws and gathered the fur and bones before going outside to bury them. As she came back in, she walked around in a circle over her nest before plopping down. Darkness loomed, and she eventually gave way to the dizzying blackness as a new, almost crippling wave of exhaustion nearly swamped her.
