The Sizzle Thread!

Thanks for your comments.

The skin is just inflamed--maybe a contact dermatitis type thing, maybe something like folliculitis. When I was at the vet's talking to the vet tech (a chicken person) about it, he suggested Polysporin (or Neosporin) AF which has antifungal meds in it. I'll give it a shot. There skin has calmed down a lot since I took them off pine shavings, but I've noticed the pullet is getting some inflammation where the feathers have broken off at the back of her neck.

I feel really sorry for these poor chickens. Even their wings seem stunted and twisted. The feathers just don't grow right and I think they stay blood feathers longer, so handling them is probably painful. I am not happy with the hatchery for breeding frizzles to frizzles, or worse, frazzles to frizzles. I was happy to accept the 50% chance of a smooth feathered bird.

If it gets cold, I'm going to have to make them little fleece sweaters.
Like mine =D lol except I actually used flannel. I keep getting flannel and fleece mixed up... Did I post a picture? I can't remember...

Yours looks to have the same skin thing going on around her tail! Do you think the wings on your pullet are sort of stunted and bent?

I guess it was you who gave me the idea of fleece--that will be gentler on the feathers than plain cloth So far, we haven't had cold. I'm in south central Texas. My pullet just grew nice feathers. They lasted about a month; and now they are breaking off. She has wire instead of feathers on the back of her neck. It is awful.

After dealing with these two I have, I think it is just wrong to ever breed for a double copy frizzle.

Good idea with the cream, anything to sooth the skin should give them a little relief.

It's to bad people knowingly breed frizzle to frizzle or worse frazzle to thing but smooth.
Fully knowing the result birds will have issues.
They really are lovely birds when breed right! And with the same health concerns of any other chicken.
are they your only frizzled chickens?
Hate the thought of people being tuned off from the breed, becouse of bad breeding practices.

Very cute sweater kinda looks like a baby doll dress. she just needs a bow on her head:)
My show girls alway get fun fur knitted scarfs in the winter theyre so cute all dressed up for winter:)

Yes, they are my only frizzles. I bought four, expecting half to be smooth but got three frazzles (double copy frizzle) and one frizzle. The frizzle was a fabulous (pet) bird but my (expletive) mini dachshund got into their yard and killed it. These two frazzles are not as cuddly as the frizzle Cochin. They are small and a bit skittish, but I wonder if they are like that because handling them probably is painful. The little frazzle cockerel comes running as fast as he can when I call him. He's very sweet, just not cuddly at all.

I would like to get a show quality smooth bantam Cochin pullet to breed to the frazzle to finally get the frizzle I wanted.

I'm hoping I won't need a sweater for my two--I'll probably just bring them in the house if they get into trouble. My biggest worry is that I won't be home when we have a drenching cold rain storm and they will get wet and chilled. They have such useless feathers!

i have a frizzle that i swear is frazzled but the lady said there is no way because she only has one frizzle in the breedeinh pen where i got it from its skin is not messed up but the feathering is not as full and big as my other frizzle so the question is is that if it is a frazzle is it ok to breed

To a smooth yes. Frazzles can be bred fine you just have to watch that they don't get injured. They won't pass the double frizzle gene to their offspring but they will pass one copy and all babies should be frizzled if she is indeed a double frizzle.

I've read that there is a gene that modifies the frizzle to make it look like a smooth, so it is possible it is a frazzle yet the breeder swear that it couldn't be because she had bred smooth to frizzle.

Here is my smooth sizzle. It's understandable that if someone didn't know she carried the frizzle gene that she would be bred back to a frizzle. We will breed her back to a regular Silkie.

She does not carry the frizzle gene. You will have to breed her to a frizzled bird if you want to get frizzles. Breeding her to a regular bird will not get you frizzles.

I don't want frizzles. I want to add color to my Silkies. Are you certain smooths don't carry the frizzle gene? If so I could breed her to my Partridge smooth Frizzle cockerel!
