I'm pretty sure frilkies bred to silkies will only produce frilkies and silkies. The gene for normal chicken feathers is dominate, so if a chicken has it, you will see it. I Think you'd have to breed your frilkie to a smooth sizzle if you want to use her.

I love seeing all the sizzle pictures!

Last night I noticed a little convention of frizzled chicks in the brooder-they were all standing in a group. Maybe they were comparing wings! Lol. Their wings are big and curling enough that it looks like they are sporting angel wings. I picked up five curly sizzles this morning, there may be more as there's 30 chicks in there and I didn't want to stir them up to much.

Sizzle's are cute, but i dont like the smooth breasted.... They just look... well like polish, but the frizzled ones are oh so cute! And frilkies are adorable... i shall stalk this thread for info AND pictures

OH MY GOSH! This idea JUST dawned on me!!!!!


I HAVE A FRIZZLE COCHIN ROOSTER!!

(haha ya i sound like an idiot XD) BUT, we MAY be getting these BLWR from someone (don't judge me YET till you know my plan) whose ordering them for us, and he could order silkies!! (hence, a sizzle)

But it would be hatchery quality sizzle ~ Both parents from a hatchery. But i dont care, i might be able to get a sizzle batch!!

And then i could SELL the chicks! The ones that aren't good ya know, and they are ADORABLE anyway, so they would sell good!!

Gosh... I'm addicted already....

It's great to have another Sizzle lover & potential breeder on board.

You're right. I'll bet that Sizzles chicks would sell like crazy in Alaska, or anywhere for that matter. I get $8 for 2 wk old chicks & I could probably get more. And of course, you definitely have the starter recipe with a Silkie & a frizzled Cochin.

However, starting from scratch is not always the best road to follow. If you go back & read posts 39 & 42 on this thread you'll see some reasons why. Of course, in Alaska you may not have the option of buying Sizzle eggs or chicks so you might have to start from the beginning. If so, I would still suggest using high quality breeding or sq stock for your beginning birds, even if you aren't planning on showing. Sizzles are a very hard project even with the best beginnings so I would think that starting with poor quality birds to start with would really be a nightmare. For instance, if you use a hatchery Silkie with a tiny crest, small beard, & poorly feathered feet, I'm not sure you could ever breed your birds up to the point where they will look like this.

I'm no genetics expert but I think you have to have good genes somewhere in the background before you can selectively breed to improve on them. You would probably be able to do it eventually but I would guess it would take years longer than if you started with nice birds to begin with. Just my opinion & I could be totally wrong. Believe me, it wouldn't be the first time! lol

About the smooth Sizzles - some people like them & some don't, but they are also very good sellers. A nice smooth Sizzle, like some of the ones shown on this thread, looks just like a Silkie with the fluffy Cochin feathers. They have the round body & feathered feet of the Silkie & Cochin, so I personally don't think they look anything like a Polish. In fact, I would be more apt to describe them as a Cochin with a crest! The nicest thing about them is that you can see the feather patterns in all the colors, whereas on the shredded Silkie feathers, the pattern disappears. Most of the blue smooth Sizzles have a beautiful laced pattern on the feathers. They're very striking. I'll see if I have any pictures that really show the pattern & if so, I'll try to post them later.

In any case, I wish you good luck with a Sizzle project. It is always nice to have another supporter so maybe someday these little guys will be recognized as a breed. In the meantime, they are just fun to have around.

"Another question.. George's daughter is the mother of 7 of my silkie chicks.. Do they possess 1 copy of the frizzled gene - or does that end with the mother?"

George's daughter looks like a Silkie & he's a Sizzle so she's a smooth Sizzle of Silkie type. Do her chicks have a frizzle gene copy? I am guessing that if the chicks were bred back to a Sizzle then some of the chicks would be Sizzles but if bred to a smooth Sizzle they would likely all produce smooths? Geez. The more I think I know, the more I realize that I actually know nothing!

hoppy, your birds are beautiful! I have a ton of questions.
How many generations along are your Sizzles?
And how are you doing as far as faults still cropping up?
Are you following some type of master plan like breeding Sizzle to Sizzle smooth for so many times & then going back to Silkie or are you just flying by the seat of your pants & doing what you think is best at the time? (As many of us are.)
Have you kept records as to which generations used which types?

lol I'm sorry to be so inquisitive & feel free to not answer any of my questions. I just keep hoping that someone out there has this basic plan that will eventually produce perfect Sizzles without all the drama of having different faults crop up at different generations along the line. I know there can never be a perfect plan, since we all start with a different gene pool, but a general road map would be nice. One that stays on the pavement rather than wandering completely off the trail!

So funny...I actually am one of the ones who prefers the smooth sizzles...All about personal preferences I guess!! You are right, the lacing patterns on the blues is beautiful. I'd love to get a blue smooth sizzle.

There are quite a few people who mistake a smooth sizzle for a Polish, but you are right, they really are more like a smooth cochin with a crest.

I need to come by soon and take a look at your Polish and Cochins. I have room for a few more feathered friends. I will give you a call in the next few days.

If I bred George to a silkie - would I still get sizzles, or would I get only frilkies and silkies?

If I can't get my hands on any smooth sizzles, what would be my best option for continuing this line? Currently I only have silkies for him to breed. Is that not the right way to do it?

Shipped eggs maybe? :/ I just lucked out finding my rooster. The owner didn't even know what he was. Thought he was just a regular silkie.

He looks more like a porcupine to me Oh and his crest is growing in nicely. He was pretty bare there for a while (fight).
