This will be my 6th or so time to quit.
Been smoking for almost 15 years now (less the year & a half I was pregnant & nursing) and it's BEEN time to quit. I just lost my main source of income, so finances are the biggest pull at the moment, but DH and I have been leaning that way already for some time.
We've tried patches, they work well-enough for us, better for me than him, they take the edge off BIG time but you gotta play with your doses (for instance I'm better with a step 2 patch for 24 hours a day and he's better off with a step 1 patch for 14 hours a day). We have losenges for those days or times where the patch isn't appropriate. We've been somewhat successful in the last year of trying to quit at learning our triggers, understanding why we smoke.
For both of us, it's sort of a depressive/slow suicide kinda thing... no don't be shocked, it's really that. A lack of something to strive for, look forward to in the future, a good REASON to live a long life... the dulldrums if you will. No, we're not over the top, we are also happy & friendly with a lot going on, but the nagging things that stick with you, perhaps my own lack of focus on the future, keeps me down, and it's been SO LONG like this that at this point, the feeling crappy everyday is ALSO part of the habit.
My triggers are morning coffee, boredom & depression, plain & simple.
I have found things that help... like hanging out with the kid (who is a teen now) after all SHE doesn't smoke, she manages to survive... the dogs don't smoke, they survive, the chickens too for that matter, and LOTS of humans I know too. A good WALK on my treadmill reminds me that I can't breathe very well and... Mini-Marshmellows & popcorn can be virtually fat free so you can eat a ton of them, cashews are good for you, and cleaning house as a last resort really helps. Last but not least... I will be trying to schedule A LOT of sleep in the 1st week of quitting, because sleeping through some of the withdrawal, REALLY DOES HELP.
Wish me luck, add me & DH to the list, because this IS NOT A DRILL, this is the REAL DEAL.
added: purplechicken... thanks for the reminder that we aren't really QUITTING cigarettes, only STOPPING the use of them.
