This will be my 6th or so time to quit.
Been smoking for almost 15 years now (less the year & a half I was pregnant & nursing) and it's BEEN time to quit. I just lost my main source of income, so finances are the biggest pull at the moment, but DH and I have been leaning that way already for some time.

We've tried patches, they work well-enough for us, better for me than him, they take the edge off BIG time but you gotta play with your doses (for instance I'm better with a step 2 patch for 24 hours a day and he's better off with a step 1 patch for 14 hours a day). We have losenges for those days or times where the patch isn't appropriate. We've been somewhat successful in the last year of trying to quit at learning our triggers, understanding why we smoke.

For both of us, it's sort of a depressive/slow suicide kinda thing... no don't be shocked, it's really that. A lack of something to strive for, look forward to in the future, a good REASON to live a long life... the dulldrums if you will. No, we're not over the top, we are also happy & friendly with a lot going on, but the nagging things that stick with you, perhaps my own lack of focus on the future, keeps me down, and it's been SO LONG like this that at this point, the feeling crappy everyday is ALSO part of the habit.

My triggers are morning coffee, boredom & depression, plain & simple.

I have found things that help... like hanging out with the kid (who is a teen now) after all SHE doesn't smoke, she manages to survive... the dogs don't smoke, they survive, the chickens too for that matter, and LOTS of humans I know too. A good WALK on my treadmill reminds me that I can't breathe very well and... Mini-Marshmellows & popcorn can be virtually fat free so you can eat a ton of them, cashews are good for you, and cleaning house as a last resort really helps. Last but not least... I will be trying to schedule A LOT of sleep in the 1st week of quitting, because sleeping through some of the withdrawal, REALLY DOES HELP.

Wish me luck, add me & DH to the list, because this IS NOT A DRILL, this is the REAL DEAL.

added: purplechicken... thanks for the reminder that we aren't really QUITTING cigarettes, only STOPPING the use of them.

WELCOME!!!!!!! I am so glad we are getting so many to join in!!!!!

I think what you said about sleep is so important!!! You can't realize you are going insane wanting a cigarette if you are asleep.

I am a HORRIBLE insomniac, too, and a HUGE part of my smoking is done at night when the kids are asleep, the house is quiet, I feel LONELY!!! I have a big bottle of melatonin to, hopefully, help me with that!!!

Thats one of my high smoking times, too- at night when I am bored. During the day, I can keep busy and barely think about smoking. At night, after the chickens are in bed, and hubby is at work is my danger time. I am currently out of work, so its a long day, every day.
I bought some gum today. I also thought that maybe every time I want to smoke, I'm going to try brushing my teeth. I never feel like smoking with freshly brushed teeth.
Once, many years ago, I quit cold turkey. My husband at the time smoked, as did all my friends. Them smoking in front of me never bothered me at all. Took husband 2 weeks to realize I had quit smoking ( and he wonders why he is an ex-husband

The next time I actually tried to quit, I was soooo cranky, my daughter actually told me to please go smoke. and I did...
I had said I wanted to stop smking by the time I was 35. Ugh, I've missed my deadline by 10 years.

They are an addictive item. So it may take many weeks to taper off for some and get to the point of not having one during the day.

Jan 1 is just a target date to really start the quit process if you haven't already. Taking that first step and doesn't necessarily mean going cold turkey. So don't stress if you are not smoke free by jan 1. Don't stress if you fall back. Acknowledge that you did and continue on the road to being smoke free. It is all part of the process. Dropping old habits for new and better ones takes time.

Where is everyone at today? I need support...lol I am trying to go ahead and quit today and that ugly little monkey keeps jumping on my back and screaming in my ear..........LOL

I am doing pretty good, so far. I have had a few puffs, but not even one whole cig. today. My enabler DH was out and went to the store and ended up bringing me 2 packs back also. I guess that old habits are hard to break...lol

I thought about PMing Mark, but he is such a nice guy and I don't see how anyone could yell at him, so I am yelling at all of you quitters out there. I will be here for all of you to yell at me, when it is your time to yell...lol

Taking one breath at a time.

Unless already mentioned, you guys should come post on BYC whenever you get the cravings!

Then we'll only need to worry about breaking BYC addictions (which have been clinically proven to be good for you and less expensive than smoking).

Well, I went back to bed and took a nap to get over a craving and of course when I woke up, then the craving was hitting me pretty hard.

I was always one to light up first thing in the morning and grab a cup of coffee. Well, I didn't have coffee this morning, so that made it easier. I hate to see when I get in my truck to go somewhere, that is another bad trigger place for me. I am used to lighting up as soon as I take off...lol

BTW, there is no breaking the BYC addictions.........LOL Anyway, all of you are BYC enablers, along with chicken/hatching enablers. Maybe I need to put some eggs in the bator and that would take my mind off of wanting that cig. The bad thing is that I don't have any fertile eggs right now. I don't have my roosters with my hens right now because my hens are not laying at this time and I don't want the roosters to mess up the feathers on my hens.

I guess that I am going to get off of here and go for a walk.

Thanks for helping, just listening, Nifty.

Good for you to jump the gun, I almost joined you yesterday but I did that before and was not ready. The trick seems to be to break a routine, or to do it differently.

Can you leave something close when you wake up that smells good and will distract you? Plus with your truck can you clean it out and hang a scented thing in there or carry something nice with you to play with, keep your hands occupied and make it a different experience.

HANG IN THERE... WE WILL ALL BE WITH YOU SOON.

JENA.
