The Sussex thread!

They're lovely! I'm not big on standards (more of a bantam girl), but I'm enjoying the pictures of them.

Maybe if I end up wanting more egg layers in my flock, I'll get a couple of Sussex girls. I'm getting a spangled OEGB rooster soon--I hope his coloring is as beautiful as these birds!

My Sussex absolutely love to free range. They do not mind the coop, but they do like to investigate EVERYTHING. We have one that had an accident. My dh was looking after the flock while I was off to a horse show one weekend...a 3 day thing. I filled an extra pan with feed so he wouldn't have to do so much. Well, the feed pan got turned up and one of the sussex chicks was under it. He didn't look or count the flock. So I came home and late on day 3 found this poor chick. Her name is now Baby Doll. She has one cloudy eye from the eye infection she got from being under the pan in all the dust. She follows you around wanting to be picked up a lot. My oldest was working horses yesterday and rode up to hand her to me. She said she was afraid she was going to run her over because she wanted to be held and followed her on the pony. There are a few also that love to go to the cattle barn. My FIL comes over and opens gates and checks cattle while feeding out hay. He gets a kick out of them also because they go and "talk" to him. I cannot say enough on how friendly and fun this breed is for us. I love my Orps, but they take second to my Sussex.

I LOVE this breed. My rooster is the most quiet of the bunch and very friendly. The girls like him best actually, because he is so kind. My pullet is lovely, sweet, and quiet as well. She and her welsummer friend hang out together all the time. I am planning on increasing my flock of SS this year because they are just such an easy bird to keep around. I will post pictures of them tomorrow.

Here are my Speckled Sussex bantams. I LOVE these birds SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much! They are very friendly and my hen lays pretty well. I am hatching everything she lays to build up my flock.
