The Sussex thread!

I have silver sussex, coronation sussex and speckled sussex. Greenfire recently bought eggs from me from my coronation sussex and silver sussex to restock. They had sold out earlier. I am in south central kentucky and will have a couple of silver sussex hens available soon along with some juveniles.

Do you ship birds or just eggs?

I'm looking for silver sussex (just a pullet or two).
My cockerel (who was supposed to be a pullet) is speckled.
(I have silver, splash, and lilac Ameraucanas, and an odd Welsummer and Dominique, so it is a really mixed little group at the moment. the little roo is bullied or ignored by everything except the Welsummer.)
I'm not breeding, just have a handful of different hens/pullets for eggs. That's why I said 'pet quality' - if the roo stays it is as a pet/flock protection, he is definitely not to-standard as he has some feathering on his legs so I am not looking for show quality.
eventually I hope to get a place with more land -and more birds!- so for now I am getting to know the breeds I would like more of later. I seem to be under a raptor fly-way, so the white-bodied varieties are not a good bet here... and the American Sussex (breeders) Association page indicated that the speckled sussex has some Brahma in the mix (at least of certain lines), so now I'm on a quest for a dark colored, closer to true breed/variety. I guess that leaves silver or buff or red/brown. I prefered the looks of the silver. I gather that some folks are working on lavender or other experimental colors (?) and wouldn't rule those out. I'm just really seeing what's available. Thanks.

Urghhh! I don't think my Light Sussex chick is pure!! They are meant to have pale skin coloured legs arent they? Well look at mine!

I would not judge them at this young age. I have had breeds that are supposed to have white skin have yellow skin on their feet when they are young. I have also had ones that are supposed to have yellow skin have pink skin for the longest time. I had a few with black skin who were white skinned at birth. Let it grow up a bit and look at it then. If you can find any pictures of other young Light Sussex it may help you.

They start out yellow but should pale out.

I know you can't see her legs in the last one, but she's turning out so pretty I couldn't resist.

I can show you a boy progression too if you'd like.

Quote: I agree. This chick is real young to worry about leg color. Give it a month.

Yes, I remember that discussion - I think my first post was to tell you I had found some chicks colored like yours that were pure SS on the Show Quality SS thread.

I think that is a girl. My Boys have big combs and wattles already, and they are almost 11 weeks old. Two have big red combs and wattles, two have small pinkish combs and wattles like your girl.
