The Sussex thread!

I got a buff Sussex today! She's soooo sweet

And so pretty!

I'm partial to the speckled, I have to admit. They're so shimmery out in the sun, really striking against the green grass.

How do y'all find the sussex for layers? I have three hens, and I've gotten three eggs in the past week. The man said they were a year old, but he also said they had just started laying. The eggs are pretty small and infrequent. Just trying to see if it's a breed thing, or if I need to do something different with mine.

My Punchkin is about a year old. I've had her for 4 months. She lays 4-5 eggs a week. They are a bit smaller than the Orpington and Barred Rock. But they lay rather large eggs and are larger girls too.

I have seven pullets coming up, three POL sussex, and four laying RIWs. The sussex eggs look half the size of the RIW eggs and I was hoping it was just a case of pullet eggs.

I would say that my Sussex's eggs are about 2/3 s to 3/4s the size of the bigger hens eggs. But that's fine with me. I often want a smaller hard boiled egg or fried egg. They are great for cooking too. :D

My Sussex is 7 months old. Her eggs are small to medium size at best. They are so small that I can't sell them. Glad to hear she is not "abnormal". She does lay4 - 5 a week. Usually they are so small I just scramble them up and feed them back to the chickens .
