The Sussex thread!

Pretty boy!! How old is he? This is only their 2nd molt. They are about 1.5yrs. so I imagine they get more speckles with each molt?

Do you have issues with your boy being aggressive at all?

We bought them from an ad, and the guy said they were a year old. Then he said the hens were just starting to lay, so I think they're really more like 6 mos? I'm still new, and age is the hardest thing for me to determine.

The roo is a total dreamboat. He's never come after me or the kids. I can't pick him up and handle him, but he's never hurt me for trying. He was second in command in the flock he came from, so sometimes I think he could be a little more protective. But, he's also been under the weather a lot (coccidiosis, now fowl pox) so maybe he'll perk up when he's over everything.

With little kids we were nervous about having a roo, but he's just an absolute gentlemen.

our Sussex hen was about 24wks when she started to lay. She was the last to lay. We got them rom TSC they were about days old. absaulute sweethearts. Pox would sit on my lap while I wen tthrough his feathers, trimmed his wings. Which I only did twice when we first put them outside. Before lettign them free range their fence didnt have top and didnt want them running off somewhere.
But once he hit 8 months he started charging. We are still working on it. I would hate to send him to freezer camp. He's too beautiful! But we are gettign more sussex this spring and if we have a rooster we will be replacing him. Either make a retirment coop for him with a few hens of his own or freezer camp. Can't have an aggressive rooster, araid he might pass that on to his offspring.

I gotta jump in here! Speckled Sussex are my favorites! Here is my roo named Sue

It was a dreary day that day & I have a cheap phone I used to take his pic. But he is beautiful. He has given me attitude before. He flogged me when I had a big bowl of food taking it back to the coop. I put him in a dog crate for a couple weeks and when I let him back out, it is like he knew he was being punished. He has been an angel ever since. I had a mate for him & was looking forward to breeding them this spring, but our dog got ahold of her

Agreed, aggression is definitely something you don't want to breed in. Mine is just fantastic, but we'll see how the next few months go.

We got the "new" SS on Oct. 6th, and we got four eggs then nothing. Last egg was on the 12th. All of them came down with a little cocci, and when they recovered I added four RIWs from quarantine. That knocked the SS hens from their high places in the pecking order. That's been about a week.

Yesterday I noticed some shavings moved around in the sussex boxes, so today I cleaned them out and fluffed them up. I'm hoping once they get their pecking order settled they'll lay again.

hm we have a dog crate on the inclosed porch that we use for quarantine/injured chickens/ or ducks...maybe that will work! I forgot when our drakes fought we put the trouble maker in a fenced in area by himself for a few days and he didn't act up after that. The next door farmers cattle go ahold of him though

Looking for Speckled Sussex chicks or fertilized eggs in or around the southeast Wisconsin area; Kenosha, Racine, Milwaukee area. I live in Union Grove but would be happy to travel a little bit or even meet half way.

. We have some RIR/SS mix. They are the best little girls. Can't wait til they start laying. I'll try to get some pics today of them, but it's pouring down snow out there now & the less time I have to spend in the snow, the better!
