The Sussex thread!

Oh are you on that group too?? And thank you! I got her from someone on Facebook who I got my Buff Orpingtons off. I got her as a day old chick for one of the BUff Orp's I bought from them. I'm not sure if she still breeds Speckled Sussex or not!
Yeah, I'm on most of them haha. It's a shame she doesn't do them anymore, I love my SS. I've been breeding them for a couple of years now:)

What do we think now? It's three weeks old today. Still no tail feathers and enormous legs compared to my other chicks (a Wyandotte, a buff orp, and an Easter egged.

The only thing I would think leans towards boy, is the red little waddles coming in. I swore my SS were all roo at that age.

Thanks for looking. I'm hoping it's a girl, but I've read so many differing things about SS as far as feather growth and having larger combs even as pullers. The wattles are making me think boy as well.

I don't keep roosters so the wait to know for sure will be long lol.

Look up the thread "Any pics of a Speckled Sussex cockerel" and there's a few good pics for comparison. It looks like the young cockerels seem to have a lot more white feathers (not down) on their chests and the combs are pretty obvious early on. Of course, it's easier if you have a bunch to compare each other to. I'm optimistic so I'm still going to say pullet for yours! Lol

She's supposed to be a pullet, but she appears to be somewhat manly looking, to us at least. Any guesses? 10 weeks old yesterday.

Hi !

Look at the hackle ( neck) feathers. If they are rounded at the ends, it is a female.
If they are pointed at the ends, it is a male.
Best Success,

Thanks. And sorry, I should have posted this in breed discussion.

We thought she was a roo since very young, but I haven't noticed any pointed saddle and/ or hackle feathers. Her feet are so think, is that normal with this breed?
