The Sussex thread!

Well, I put (Ebay purchased from a reputable seller) coro sussex eggs under my broody orpington. Although some eggs were fertile, none hatched. I tried again--from a different seller and picking them up from my post office this time. Still no luck. We will be driving to Western Michigan to a cottage in about a week--does any one know a breeder of Coro's so I can pick a pullet or a couple chicks up on the way home? We go through Toledo...

I had about the same luck with my Coro Sussex eggs. Mine arrived OK, 4 out of 8 developed, but only one hatched. As I was tossing the incubator debris on day 24, one egg was still alive. I felt terrible, because it may have hatched if I left it alone. Then around 18 months later, my only Coro Sussex died from the heat. I think they may be a more fragile breed.

I hope you find some & if you do, please share some pics!

Have you checked the Breeders directory at the American Sussex Association? there may be several breeders on the way to Western Michigan that you may be passing close to. give it a shot they may even have some started birds for you to pick up. It's late in the year to hatch Sussex chicks .the best winter layers historically for the breed are hatched in February and March. what you should be looking for this time of year is started birds birds. that Breeders have raised for show and for some reason the color is a little off or something and they've got these nice started birds they're looking to sell.
the birds would have been hatched around February March and will make you good winter layers.
Best,
Karen and the Light Sussex in Western Pennsylvania

Well I heard that strangled cat in the garage this morning and I'm very happy camper! That's what Cockerelss sound like as they learn to crow. I thought I had all pullets. turns out I've got one rooster. is a pretty boy too.
Just thought I'd share,
Karen

Congrats & I hope you enjoy the symphony of strange noises heading your way.
(I once had a roo that sounded exactly like the cartoon character Homer Simpson shouting "WooHoooooo!" It lasted for a couple of weeks until he got his big boy crow.)

I have two darling speckled Sussex! One im fairly certain is a boy though (which is fine.. but I would have loved two hens!)

This is Rocky, the one I've suspected was a rooster from about 3 days old. What do some experienced Sussex owners think?! Will be 12 weeks on the 26th

Grew "huge", has more comb (redder) and wattles developing, unusual looking tail feathers (some are more squared and some are arching, compared to my other Sussex), and seems more "manly". I have better tail close ups if needed. Absolutely LOVE this breed.

:loveand this is the lovely Jewel
Same age as Rocky. Smaller, less red in the face, hardly any wattle showing (and is still yellow/pale/white looking), smooth rounded tail feathers, smaller frame (more feminine like),

I finally got my Coronation Sussex! Many thanks to Brian and Jessica of BJ's Poultry in Howell Michigan--we got her safely home to Pennsylvania --it was a long car ride!
