The Sussex thread!

Oh nuts. that means I have 5 cockerels and two pullets. well the lady is not going to want five cockrels,I don't think. but maybe she'll take a trio. I still have three or four eggs left to hatch ,so hopefully I'll get another pullet.
can you remember about the temperature? is it the higher temperature that affects the the females or is that the lower temperature in the incubator than affects the females ?
thanks,
Karen

Higher temp more males
Lower temp more females

These pictures are from last summer, I will have to get some new ones once it warms up a bit. I have a Buff Sussex and a Red Sussex. The Buff (Peach) is really timid and was the smallest of all my pullets when I got them. Now she is the biggest, but still bottom of the pecking order. Penny (the Red) is sweet and very curious. Anyone else have a Red Sussex? I never see posts about them.

Peach is a dream girl.

Well we got a Speckled Sussex in early March & WOW does she live up to all those claims of "great personality!" Orig. it was DD who wanted one after seeing all those beautiful pics from @Johnn of Dorothy, but DS claimed the SS for himself. (Don't worry, DD got a silkie to spoil, so she's OK with it.) Anyway, the SS is content to sit in his lap while watching TV or playing video games. The SS is also frequently in his arms as he's playing outside in all of his grand adventures. Every day shortly after getting home from school, he makes his way to the coop to grab his "Special Sussex" Of course he lost 3 teeth in the past 3 weeks, so it sounds like he's saying "Special Sauce"- which is now her nickname.

For the past 4 years, "HIS" chicken was a leghorn mix, named Firefighter. That hen laid giant 3oz eggs almost daily but DS rarely interacted with her. Last summer she kept laying shell-less eggs no matter how much calcium we tried to force into her. Sadly we had to put her down to avoid getting egg-eaters. DS wanted another leghorn, but I'm so grateful he instead chose our SS, "Special."

Sweet! We love our "dotty girl" whose name is.. Dot! She is the sweetest chickie we have next to the Buffs and Salmon Faverolles.

Hoping someone can answer this question.

I have a group of Speckled Sussex and I'll be getting some Light Sussex chicks in a couple weeks. I have two separate coops with separate runs.

My question: Speckled Sussex Roo x Light Sussex hens
-will this produce sex-link offspring?
-what should I expect the offspring to look like?
My plan would be to keep the best Speckled Sussex Roo with Speckled hens in one coop and the other would have the Light Sussex hens and a Speckled Roo. Reasoning to do this, locals here buy their chicks from commercial farms and it'd be great if I could keep it local instead. =)

All advice and thoughts are welcome.
