The Sussex thread!

I hatched 2 SS a few weeks back and got 1 boy and 1 girl. I'm keeping the girl but have to sell the boy. How much is a fair price for a purebred SS rooster? Purebred heritage breeds are rare in my area, most people only keep barnyard mixes and production breeds. And that's pretty much all the feed stores bring in.I'm don't know how much to ask for him and I want the new owners to value him, free roosters end up in the stew pot alot.
Wow, people manage to sell them where you are?! Here you are lucky to give one away for free!

I'm not sure if he will sell but I thought it was worth a try. Like I said any purebred is hard to find here unless you want rir, rocks,or leghorns.I have a friend who will take him to freezer camp if I can't find a home for him.

Don't know where you are from but out this way pure bred or not most people can get $10-15 for their roosters. The biggest problem with selling birds here is that A) no one really wants roosters and B) you can have a knock out show quality or super rare bird, but no one here is willing to pay over $10... Sometimes free is the only way to go. Especially since you said you would give him to a friend to eat. If it doesn't really matter if he gets a home or served with a side of potatos I would say try selling him for a couple of bucks.. If that doesn't work try giving him away for free to a home where someone will want him for his roosterly-qualities.

Our SS will be six weeks old this weekend. They have been out in their outside pen for about a week now and they seem to be enjoying it. They are so entertaining! I love watching them run around, spread their wings, scratching the ground, and racing to see what the others have. Here are a few pics of their new area.

I hatched out the most beautiful red Sussex pullets this spring. I used a Heritage RIR rooster over light sussex hens and of course they were sex link. The girls are now three months old and very pretty red Sussex and the boys look like light Sussex with a little bit more black

Interesting! I've been told I could use a RIR over a SS to get to Red Sussex, never thought about using one over a Light. Pictures soon maybe?

I would love to do pictures but I do not know how. I am one of them old guys that is technically illiterate. I have been on BYC for 4 years now and have been asked may times for pictures maybe its time I learn how.

I found a picture of my red Sussex, well sort of. If you go to Feathersite and look at that picture of the red Sussex pullet you will see mine. The only difference is mine has a little bite of horning on the front of there legs. Otherwise they are white.
