The Sussex thread!

Nofowlplay - My hens still pick on my pullets and they've been together for about 6 weeks now.  As the pullets get bigger there is less pecking and chasing.  Mostly I think the pullets want to run from the hen so the hens think they need to chase and peck at them.  Some nights on the roost they all get along, other nights they are picking on each other.  It seems that is just the way they do things until everyone is full grown.

Thanks Ochochicas! I hope Punch eventually even goes in the coop at night. As of now she is sleeping on a roost by herself in the covered pen.. The coop is inside the pen but she has not slept there,:/

These are my speckled sussex babes. 2 months old. I'm thinking girls, but I've been wrong before. :)
Any thoughts?

Hi !

,
Sounds right. SS lay a cream to light brown egg which can have a pinkish cast.

Best,

Thanks Karen!

Still unsure as to whether it is the SS. I have a Exchequer Leghorn that is also at POL. The egg is so light, we thought at first, it might be a white egg, but when compared to something white, it has a beautiful pinkish tint. Either way, I am extremely excited that my girls are finally laying eggs!

Hi!,
More than welcome. Hopefully the next few days you can
catch the hen in the act laying the egg and know for sure.
Best,
Karen

A story:

This is Agatha. Agatha is a sweet, sweet girl. Agatha is 8 weeks old. One day (today), Agatha's mommy (me) realized that Agatha is smaller than her sisters. Agatha's mommy (still me) also noticed that Agatha has grown almost no tail feathers. Poor Agatha!

Suddenly, Agatha's mommy had a BIG THOUGHT! What do you think Agatha's mommy thought?

Agatha's mommy thought about how Sussexes are a feather-sexed breed, and how boys get their feathers slower than girls. Agatha's mommy thought that MAYBE Agatha was a BOY!

Would anyone like to chime in and help finish this fairy tale?

Agatha as a 3-day old chick (so, so fluffy):

A photo of the egg....I've had my other 2 brown egg layers since January and have not seen an egg with this coloring before. It must be from my Speckled Sussex . Can anyone offer an opinion.?
:jumpy
It's likely fertile too...she was in a pen with 2 roosters when I bought her and I've only had her 17 days. Is the egg safe to eat? I have read fertile eggs are fine.
Thanks!
