The Sussex thread!

Hi Sussexians! I'm hopping on this thread because I'm expecting two Speckled Sussex eggs from Meyer anywhere between 7/19 - 7/21. I'm PRAYING they are received in good condition & I am able to hatch them. I've never hatched an egg before...

Only two eggs?? I heard that the hatch rate on shipped eggs is about 50%. You could end up with one chick. Do you have an incubator, or are you using a broody hen?

Didn't know you could order only 2 eggs! I hope they arrive safely and that all your chicks do well! My SS is very sweet .....she laid her 3rd egg today . That's an egg a day for 3 days!

Please keep us updated!
Did you order hen eggs.....or can they tell in the shell what they will be?
:jumpy
LOL I couldn't decide which breeds to order so I ordered 2 each of the speckled sussex, black australorp, Rhode island reds, buff orpington, barred rock, + 4 easter eggers, + 1 assorted Bantam (hoping for mille de fleur d' uccle). I understand that hatch rate is only about 50% in shipped eggs, & with me being brand new to this I'm trying to not get my hopes up. But gosh, I sure hope against hope that I'll get some sweet beautiful hens out of it! According to the Meyer website you can place small orders but if it's less than 6 eggs there will be an additional $7 small order fee. But they don't charge shipping on egg orders. They say only straight run eggs, it sure would be nice if i could ask for girlie eggs! Congratulations on your sweet little layer!

i made a styrofoam incubator taking ideas from the home made thread here on BYC. I only have the hardware cloth shelving to finish. Here are some pics I took last night:

I'm attempting the 'dry hatch method' & it has held temp between 99 ~ 100 with 30 ~ 35% humidity for 2 days now. Tomorrow I'll try a practice run with grocery store eggs after finishing the shelving to see what it does with 15 dummy eggs. I feel like a mad scientist!

I'm really loving the dry hatch method. When it goes below 30% I add 2 T water in a sponge. I leave the plugs open. First hatch was 11 out of 14 and second was 12 out of 18. Mailed eggs. So I got lucky. Enjoy, it's so rewarding.

You are a mad scientist! LOL

Building an incubator isn't something I'd ever want to do. I decided if I ever hatched out eggs it would have to be with a broody, and now I have two of them! I bought them some local eggs, but no sussex in the bunch. I hope you get two sussex pullets out of your eggs. Unfortunately you can't tell in advance what is inside the egg. Keep us posted. :)

My hatchery girl "Sparrow" She's 16 weeks now, but no signs of being close to laying yet. She's turned out to be very sweet and loves to eat huckleberries out of your hand!
