Hi All,
Although I've had other breeds of chickens for a few years now, this is my first experience with Speckled Sussex. I recently got chicks from a local breeder that I've come to learn may have misrepresented her birds. I'm hoping those of you with more experience can help me by looking at this 6 week old chick that I think may be a Speckled Sussex pullet. As a chick she did have the chipmunk coloring and a pretty sharp triangle on the top of her head. I thought she would have more of the typical "speckles" by now. She has a hatch mate that has a larger comb and wattles and a lot of black in it's feathers, but my camera battery died mid-photo-session so I'll have to post his later.

Any comments will be much appreciated. Thank you very much.

Yes, it does look like a welsummer. A speckled Sussex would have white legs and would have started showing mahogany color in the feathers and would have white spots by now. They do look similar as chicks. She's a cutie.

Patty is a lovely girl. She's always the leader of any of the foraging expeditions in her flock.


Only complaint is that she's pretty aggressive with treats. She doesn't bother me, but when the kids are down there she makes them nervous because she'll start pecking at hands if she thinks you're holding something.

I've taught them to "shoo" her with their foot.. But

Hello! I am new here but I have been looking in on backyard chickens but I love speckled sussex chickens. I hope you can share stories about your speckled sussex chickens and tell me a little bit more about them. I want some in my laying hen flock. But I do not have a laying hen flock but I am going to get some. Right now only two Seramas. LOL

I am so excited for you! I wish I could have some. Everyone says they are shameless treat hounds. Somebody said in a review about them that the Speckled Sussex chick was the most social chick he/she has ever gotten.

I have only had the pleasure of knowing on SS. She was chatty, but not loud, and sang herself to sleep at night. She also likes to greet company when the guineas and peacocks sound the visitor alarm. She is my Uncle's lap chicken.
