Going to the experts for gender checks on my 4 1/2 week old Speckled Sussex chicks. If either are boys, I'll need to find them a place to live and find a replacement pullet. I can only have 6 hens in my town - so there is no way that I would settle for only 5

. For each chick, I took a head shot, chest shot and wing shot. I'm hoping that I have enough for some clear gender determinations.

I would love your opinions and what you see that makes you guess pullet

- thanks!

Both are looking like pullets. At this age you should start seeing some big and pink combs and wattles. I've got some outside about this age and will try to post a picture ( later today) of a cockerel for you to compare it to.

Good morning All!

I just had my first hatch of SS last night, 12 of 12 but they were hand delivered.

To my surprise this morning I have a solid white chick in the hatcher. Has anyone ever experienced a solid white in there SS?

I know they are pure SS as these are from a friend of mines stock, nothing "jumped the fence" so to speak.

Also spoke with him this morning about it and he said that in the many he has hatched, he has never gotten a white himself from them. Any thoughts??

Is SS Silver Sussex or Speckled Sussex?

They are Speckled but we just figured out the mystery. Someone accidentally put a Salmon faverolle egg in the carton.

So I have 11 beautiful Speckled Sussex chicks this morning!

I have another speckled sussex newbie question: I have the 11 day olds, I am noticing that some of them have a lighter or gold base appearance while others are darker or a copper base appearance, does that mean anything?? TIA

yes you should I have one that is 6 weeks old he has little wattles and a pink comb

hentymes there is a lot of variance in the color. not all of the birds are the perfect mahogany shade. I have one that I can't wait to see how she finishes out right now she looks Mille Flur ( can't spell) anyway she is cool , not up to the standard but I like her.
