The tiny serama; a Hatching adventure

This is just a joke, Fluffy. BUT… how about an EXTRA-LARGE broody community nest? 🤣 Sorry… but I’m picturing a tiny broody in each corner, with Foureira nesting in the middle. 😂

With only two eggs, the scene would not be as peaceful, I fear:lau. I still can't figure out how they all fit in the nest, nevermind how Foureira let the other hen sit!

Scary Spice scares Foureira for some reason, she won't peck back. Weird thing is, Scary Spice isn't head hen. She's terrified of the other hen, but Foureira has no trouble kicking her out

Haven't updated this in a few days.

Things are going good, Foureira doesn't get up every day to stretch, but she's doing OK.

The other day while she was preening I tried to calmly scoop her up to give her a pedicure, but she wasn't into that one bit; she executed a fly-attack at my hand. I guess the future chicks will be safe :idunno

She's a busy mother, she doesn't have time for a pedicure anymore.

But good that she'll keep the chicks safe!

Out of my 8 (now 7) original hens (all Buff Orps and Barred Rocks), only 1 (a BO) has ever gone broody and she was NOT fiery at all. In fact, she was quite "easy" to break (by "easy", I mean that I did not have to cage her - just removed her from.the nest box 542 time per day for about a week 🤪) and she never attacked me (just some growling and screeching).

Anyway, I guess I got lucky (I don't have a roo, and don't want to hatch eggs). However, I AM getting 2 Bantam Cochins in a couple of weeks, and I've heard those are notoriously broody. We'll see if my luck holds!

In your case, @fluffycrow , I suppose it's a good thing that Foureira is spicy! That must mean those mothering instincts are strong!

I find every broody to have her own "style". The more one knows their birds, (and I know you know your birds very well) the more they can see in their birds when they go broody

Cruella is a good girl. She's good with brooding (she's also my most experienced broody), will attack if you try to touch her or the eggs while she's sitting, but will not go out of her way to attack you even if she has chicks. If you try picking them up, that's another story.

Ursula doesn't peck at all while brooding, and will let me move her and whatnot with no issue. She does protect the chicks like Cruella, but she doesn't protect the nest from me; possibly because she likes me more. Ursula isn't as determined as the rest of my broodies, but as she's grown, she's doing very good.

Cruella's daughters have wanted to brood already, but I haven't let them. They had a similar style of nest protection as their mother; mostly genetic, it seems.

The brahma mix was also very mellow. She's generally a very mild-tempered, smart bird. She took determined to a whole different level, though. At only 10 months old, she sat perfectly for 3 weeks, and when the unfortunate events took place, she sat for two more weeks, despite my attempts to break her. She never attacked me, on or off the nest. I'm hoping she goes broody next year, because she will be a wonderful mother.

The serama are fun. They mostly scream. Dramatic little things, they are

Foureira is the only broody I've had so far that has attacked me off the nest while she's still without chicks. I wouldn't necessarily say her instincts are stronger, but they're definitely more hard-core
